The Capital District––or Capital Region––is the name given to the 5,199 square miles of land comprising the eastern-most part of the middle region of New York. The Capital Region spans eight counties total and includes notable cities such as Schenectady, Saratoga, Troy, and the state capital of Albany. It is home to over 1.1 million people, with a diverse population and rich history.
Our earliest knowledge of the area now known as the Capital District comes from the Algonquian and Iroquois tribes who lived in the region through the 1600s. As European settlers discovered the rich resources of the area, the Dutch West India Company created a fur-trading post known as Fort Orange in what is now Albany. Though the eastern territory of New York was under British rule, this area was also a hotspot of trading and commerce, thanks to easy accessibility to and from the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers. Over time, French, Dutch, British, and Native American traders helped build this convenient meeting place into a thriving merchant settlement.
In 1807, Albany’s water routes provided the city with even more traffic and commerce, with the building of Robert Fulton’s steamboat line to New York City in 1807 and the building of the Erie Canal in 1825. Just six years later, the railroad came to the Capital District. The early rails spanned between Schenectady and Albany but eventually ran across the state to Buffalo and beyond.
The numerous historical, recreational, and natural highlights of the Capital District make it a veritable playground for those living in or looking forward to exploring the eastern parts of New York. Take, for example, the Nelson A. Rockefeller Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany. Though this 98-acre complex has endured controversy and a variety of perspectives since its construction began in 1965, the ESP currently houses New York State government buildings, fountains, a museum, theatres, shops, parks, and hosts an annual farmer’s market. The Egg can also be spotted at the Empire State Plaza. So named for its unique shape, The Egg is home to two theatres that regularly host a variety of film, dance, and theatrical events.
Yesterday and tomorrow come together in the Capital District, as well. The Howe Caverns were officially discovered in 1842, but the maze of underground caves and rivers that winds 156 feet below the surface has its origins in prehistoric times. With its eye to the sky, the Dudley Observatory, located in Schenectady, is the oldest independent US organization for the history and education of astronomical studies. Chartered by the state in 1852, it is home to rare books and writings on topics of astronomy dating back to the 1400s, making it one of the most significant collections in the world.
From exploring the many public collections in the Capital District, such as the famous Saratoga Automobile Museum, to discovering new artisans in the many communities, the diversity, creativity, and ingenuity of the people in this part of New York make traveling the area a welcoming and inspiring experience.

It’s hard to imagine an automotive world without Chevrolet, largely due to the fact that the brand was one of the manufacturers to help establish the industry as we know it today. Founded in partnership between William Crapo “Billy” Durant of General Motors and Louis Chevrolet, a Swiss engineer and race car driver, the Chevrolet Motor Company of Michigan was incorporated on November 3, 1911.
The first models produced between 1912 and 1914 are known today as “The Classic Six” and are very similar in style and performance. These early Chevys had a price tag of around $2,150, which correlates to around $57,000 today. Despite the hefty price tag, Chevrolet celebrated its 23rd anniversary on November 13, 1934, as the 10-millionth vehicle drove off the assembly line. Flash forward just 20 years, and that number reached 50 million.
Today, over one million new Chevy vehicles are sold each year. With a lineup that includes something for every driver, it’s easy to see why so many drivers choose Chevy. From muscle cars like the Corvette and Camaro to daily drivers like the Malibu or the Spark, and even the innovative Bolt electric vehicle, Chevy cars have continuously zipped along American highways and byways. Trucks like the Silverado and Colorado go to work to build the American dream, while SUVs like the Trailblazer, Blazer, Equinox, Suburban, Traverse, Trax, and Tahoe take us on journeys of life and imagination.
Chevrolet vehicles make the ideal travel companion for commuters, explorers, workers, and off-roaders, with a large selection of trims, options, and features for each model. Stop by DePaula Chevrolet to discover the vehicle that will take you to your next destination.
