More power and better performance have always been trademark improvements for many new model year Chevy pickup trucks. The engineers maintain that level of credibility with the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500, which continues to break the mold as the go-to light-duty pickup truck for those who need a durable, powerful, and versatile half-ton. The new model year Silverado comes with some exciting new features that are bound to keep a smile on the face of enthusiasts every time they step foot in the cabin.
For 2023, the Silverado receives an improved Duramax turbocharged diesel option for select trims, giving Silverado owners better ways to trailer and tow with ease. The Duramax improvements are also accompanied by the all-new ZR2 Bison, which is a special edition of the recent ZR2 trim, which made its way to production model Silverado 1500s as part of the 2022 model year line-up. With the ZR2 Bison, you have even better off-road performance capabilities and utilities, thanks to Chevy's collaboration with American Expedition Vehicles.
The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 is available in multiple configurations, styles, and trims. In fact, there are nine different trims offering different levels of customization, features, performance, and luxury. For work purposes, you have the WT, followed by the Custom and the Custom Trail Boss. For more customization, you have the LT, while more performance-oriented truckers may be keen on the RST. For affordable off-roading, there is the LT Trail Boss, while entry-level luxury truckers may find the LTZ more accommodating. For high-end luxury, there is the High Country, and for high-end off-road performance, there is the ZR2. The Silverado 1500 is also available in eight different colors, which include Radiant Red, Dark Ash Metallic, Northsky Blue Metallic, Harvest Bronze Metallic, Glacier Blue Metallic, and Sand Dune Metallic.
Performance for the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 is built around four different powertrains, three of which give you the options of rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive and one coming with four-wheel drive only. So depending on what you need the truck for will depend on which powertrain best suits your intended driving profile.
At the top of the list is the highly optimized and revamped 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder high-output engine. This engine re-debut for the Chevy Silverado 1500 for the 2022 model year, featuring lots of internal revamps to strengthen the constitution of the block and give drivers access to more power, better performance, and higher durability. The 2.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder high output manages 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It's paired up with an eight-speed automatic transmission and can manage a maximum towing capacity of 9,500 lbs.
The 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 is the next in line, offering up to 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. The 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 is paired with the ten-speed automatic transmission, featuring Tow/Haul mode. The 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 manages an impressive towing rating of up to 11,200 lbs, making it more than capable for most common towing needs.
If you need even more power out of the truck, especially for payloads, the 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 is the way to go, featuring 420 hp at 460 lb-ft of torque. The 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 is also paired up with the ten-speed automatic transmission and delivers impressive towing of up to 13,300 lbs, making it an excellent choice for those who want the whole kit and caboodle out of the Silverado 1500 when it comes to performance scaling.
Last but not least is the venerable Duramax 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder turbo-diesel. For 2023, the engineers went back to the drawing board to find new ways to improve the overall performance of the Duramax while retaining its trademark durability and longevity. This includes buffing the overall output by 10% and max torque by 7.6%. The 2023 Duramax 6-cylinder turbo-diesel can now output 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque, making it one of the most capable diesel engines in its segment.
The Duramax is able to achieve these new ratings thanks to a lot of internal buffs, including all-new steel pistons and a completely revised combustion bowl, so the engine can output more work at higher compression levels without breaking down. All new fuel injectors and a returned turbo compressor work in conjunction with improved temperature monitoring control to ensure that the Duramax is working with high efficiency without overstepping its limits. The Duramax manages an impressive maximum towing capacity of 13,300 lbs, and it can be equipped on multiple trims, including the LT, LT Trail Boss, Custom Trail Boss, RST, LTZ, and High Country.
The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 continues the trend of being a reliable workhorse and a comfortable truck that makes it great for daily driving. This is all thanks to cabin and bed features and functionalities that offer versatility and variety for different kinds of truck owners. With a short, standard, and long bed, it gives you lots of options for how to haul cargo and make use of the Silverado's payload capabilities.
The Silverado offers further convenience in the utility department with the Multi-Flex Tailgate, offering six distinct functionalities that allow you easy access to the bed. The benefit of the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 is that you're not limited to just the base models. Various trims allow you to outfit them with packages that improve the truck’s capabilities and functionalities. A good example of this is the ZR2 Bison, a special edition of the Silverado 1500's ZR2 trim. Chevy teamed up with American Expedition Vehicles, or AEV, to bring the ZR2 Bison to life. This special edition of the ZR2 comes with three-millimeter-thick AEV-stamped steel bumpers with e-coating, reinforcing them for the harshest of off-road traversal.
The ZR2 Bison also comes equipped with five hot-stamped boron steel skid plates to protect the undercarriage. Added steel rocker panel protection, 18-inch AEV wheels, and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory Mountain Tires help round out the package. The ZR2 Bison also features all of the standard ZR2 benefits but with the added AEV bonuses.
If the ZR2 Bison is a little too much truck for your tastes, the Z71 Off-Road and Protection Package offers many similar features but at a more affordable price. This package includes Rancho twin-tube shocks, hill descent control, skid plates, and 18-inch or 20-inch wheels, depending on the trim, accompanied by all-terrain blackwall tires.
A Rally Edition is available for the Custom and RST trims, which adds black badging and performance enhancements to the Silverado. The Realtree Special Edition also offers unique Realtree decals and badging, with special exhaust tips and assist steps. With the All Star Edition Plus and All Star Edition Premium, you get 20-inch aluminum wheels with Grazen painted pockets, and everything from the Convenience Package II, which includes a universal home remote, hitch guidance with hitch view, trailer brake controller, trailering app, and a rear sliding power window. Alternatively, you can get the RST Texas Edition Premium Package, which includes everything from the All Star Edition Plus, the Convenience Package II, the Safety Package, Leather Package, and the Protection Package.
For those who want something simple to deck their Silverado out with but are not willing to spend too much doing so, there is the Dark Essentials Package. This unique package comes with black decals and accents, along with special engine badging. It’s very similar to the Midnight Edition, which outfits the Silverado in black, with matching black wheels, accents, and badging. If you don't want the special editions but still want the off-road performance, you can get the Off-Road Suspension Package.
If you don't need enthusiast or convenience packages but are interested more in work-related packages, the Work Truck Package, Work Truck Safety Package, Work Truck Convenience Package, and Work Truck Value Package are the perfect solutions. These packages center around features such as skid plates and high-capacity air filters, as well as window defoggers, heated power mirrors, tinted glass, and cruise control. There is also the inclusion of features like hitch guidance and a trailer hitch with seven-pin and four-pin connectors.
