This is because drivers appreciate the versatility of pickup trucks, and family drivers have come to realize that full-size trucks provide the comfort and safety features they desire in a vehicle.
In comparing the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 vs 2023 Ram 1500, you will see the two most advanced models in the storied history of both trucks. The Silverado 1500 started life as the top trim on Chevy's C/K series truck in the 1970s before being launched as an independent model in 1999. On the other hand, the Ram 1500 was originally the Dodge Ram 1500 before Ram became a separate company in 2009. The 2023 Silverado 1500 comes in the ZR2 trim, while the Ram 1500 offers the Rebel for off-road enthusiasts. However, the Chevy comes out on top when looking at key specifications, including towing, payload, bed size, and more.
The most important factor in the performance of your truck is its engine. This will determine details like towing and hauling capabilities, acceleration, and fuel economy. However, each driver has their own needs. This is why automakers like Chevy and Ram offer different engine options on their pickup trucks. But Chevy offers four different engine options on the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500, one more than the three engines offered on the 2023 Ram 1500.
The standard engine on the 2023 Silverado 1500 is a 2.7-liter Turbo High-Output I-4. This four-cylinder gas engine is surprisingly powerful for its size. This is due to the use of a unique dual volute turbocharger, which helps this 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque.
The second engine on the 2023 Silverado 1500 is a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8. This comes standard on the LTZ and High Country trims. It is also available on the WT, Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, and LT Trail Boss trims. This engine is larger than the 2.7-liter Turbo I-4, delivering 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque.
The first of the two top engines on the Silverado 1500 is a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 gas engine. This is the standard engine on the ZR2 trim and is available on the Custom Trail Boss, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country trims. Chevy only offers this engine on trucks with four-wheel drive. This engine features Dynamic Fuel Management technology and can provide 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque.
The final engine option is a 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel I-6. You can choose this engine as an option on the Custom Trail Boss, LT, RST, LT Trail Boss, LTZ, and High Country trims, giving you an impressive 305 hp and 495 lb-ft of torque. That is a 28 hp and 35 lb-ft improvement over last year's Duramax option.
The 2023 Ram 1500 offers three engine options, including a turbo-diesel, but none of them can match the output of the four engines available on the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500. The base engine is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 engine, which features Ram's eTorque technology, a type of mild-hybrid system to improve efficiency. The 3.6-liter V6 delivers 305 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. This is significantly less output than the 2.7-liter Turbo I-4 on the Chevy Silverado.
Ram offers two other engine options on the 2023 Ram 1500. The first is a 5.7-liter HEMI V8 gas engine. This engine also features an eTorque mild-hybrid system to improve efficient performance. However, this engine tops out at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque, which is considerably less than the output of Chevy's largest V8.
The second available engine option on the 2023 Ram 1500 is a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6. While providing similar efficiency to the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel available on the Chevy Silverado 1500, this engine cannot match its performance. The Ram EcoDiesel provides just 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque, less than what is offered by the Chevy turbo-diesel.
Ram has decided to equip each of the engines on the 2023 Ram 1500 with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevy has taken a different approach to the choice of transmission. While examples of the 2023 Silverado 1500 with the 2.7-liter Turbo I-4 also feature an eight-speed transmission, the three other engines feature a 10-speed automatic transmission. The additional gear speeds will give you improved efficient performance and greater control.
One of the biggest reasons drivers choose a pickup truck is its ability to tow trailers and haul heavy cargo loads. No other passenger vehicle is going to give you the versatility offered by a truck. In comparing the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 to the 2023 Ram 1500, you will see that the Chevy gives you more towing and hauling capability than the Ram.
The base engine on the Ram 1500 is a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6. When equipped with this engine, the 2023 Ram 1500 can tow up to 7,730 lbs. Meanwhile, the maximum towing capability of a Silverado 1500 with the 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 is an impressive 11,200 lbs.
Similarly, the more powerful engine options on these two trucks show that Chevy delivers better towing capability. If you choose a Chevy Silverado 1500 with a 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8, you can tow up to 13,300 lbs, significantly more than the 12,750 lbs of a Ram 1500 with the available 5.7-liter HEMI V8. If you want a diesel engine on your truck, the 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 will again give you more trailering capacity than the Ram 1500. If equipped with the 3.0-liter Duramax turbo-diesel, your Silverado 1500 may be capable of towing 13,300 lbs. A Ram 1500 with the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 can only tow up to 9,600 lbs, a full 3,700 lbs less than the Chevy.
The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 and the 2023 Ram 1500 have fairly comparable hauling capabilities. While the Chevy can carry up to 2,270 lbs of cargo, the Ram can handle slightly more with its 2,300-lb max payload capacity. However, Chevy gives you more room to carry that cargo in the Silverado 1500's bed.
Chevy offers three different bed sizes on the 2023 Silverado 1500, while Ram only offers two. In addition, there is more room in the Chevy than there is in the Ram 1500. The short bed on the Chevy provides 62.9 cu.ft. of cargo space, while the standard bed fits up to 71.7 cu.ft. of cargo. The Chevy's long bed gives you a best-in-class 89.1 cu.ft. of cargo space. Meanwhile, the largest bed on the Ram gives you only 61.5 cu.ft. of cargo space, less than even the Chevy's short bed. The short bed on the Ram 1500 provides an even more minuscule 53.9 cu.ft. of space for cargo.
Automakers have spent the last two decades using technology to make their vehicles more connected. This is true of trucks, which now feature standard infotainment systems. The 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 features the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system with a color touchscreen. The 2023 Ram 1500 also comes equipped with the Uconnect system. However, while the Silverado 1500 has a standard seven-inch touchscreen, with a 13.4-inch screen on the top trims, the Ram 1500 offers only a five-inch touchscreen on its lower trim levels. If you want the larger 8.4-inch or 12-inch touchscreen, you must spring for a higher trim level on the Ram 1500.
Both of these systems have comparable features, like Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free calls.
