It can be frustrating to hear about exciting features in a car just to have your dreams crushed upon realizing said features aren’t part of the base experience. Sometimes, manufacturers instead will force you to spend extra money to get what you truly want. This isn’t an issue with the 2024 Chevy Equinox LS.
What you do get with the Chevy Equinox LS is a base experience unlike most others – an experience that other manufacturers would find various ways to nip and tuck at to save a penny, or more commonly, simply charge you – the driver – more money to have. There are many examples of this with the Equinox LS, ranging from how it presents its powertrain to the tech included without further negotiations between yourself and the sales team you’re working with or even the engineers putting together the vehicle at the plant. To put it both simply and firmly, the 2024 Equinox LS is a stellar value and one that other manufacturers may have trouble replicating within their lineups but must find an answer to immediately.

The 2024 Chevy Equinox LS comes with a turbocharged engine that provides superb results in both performance and efficiency. What the 2024 Chevy Equinox LS powertrain includes is a turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. With the turbocharged 1.5L I-4 engine, the 2024 Equinox LS outputs 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque, which also helps the Equinox obtain a relatively modest but adequate towing capacity of 1,500 lbs. FWD comes standard, but AWD is also present in what’s known as ‘Switchable AWD.’ What this means is that FWD is typically what’s active, but on a dime, you can turn AWD on, which will redirect torque to all four wheels instead of only the front two, and having the ability to immediately switch it on means going off the beaten path or encountering unforeseen rain or snowfall will be no issue.
Aside from some features that you’d expect, like the 4-wheel antilock disc brakes, 4-link rear suspension, and StabiliTrak, the 2024 Equinox LS also comes with features like driver shift controls behind the steering wheel, adding a nice manual-transmission-esque experience if you wish to change gears that way instead of automatically. The 2024 Equinox LS has a 3.87 axle ratio and a GVWR of 4,630 lbs, has a fully-electric parking brake activated with the press of a button, and thanks to features like Automatic Start/Stop, stopping your vehicle at a stop sign or red light will shut the engine off, which can help extend the engine’s lifespan and reduce fuel consumption.
With various means of retaining fuel efficiency, let’s talk numbers. With the powertrain that comes standard with the 2024 Equinox LS, fuel economy ratings are influenced by which drivetrain you’re using. With that said, utilizing FWD earns your EPA-estimated ratings of 26 MPG in the city, 31 MPG on the highway, and 28 MPG combined, and utilizing the switchable AWD only narrowly adjusts the fuel economy numbers, with ratings of 24 MPG in the city, 30 MPG on the highway, and 26 MPG combined.
The 2024 Chevy Equinox LS is one of the most tech-focused base trims money can buy. For starters, the Equinox LS not only gets Chevy Safety Assist, but it also features Chevy Teen Driver technology, which you won’t find any comparable solution, especially with vehicles by other brands in a similar price range. If you live with a teenage driver who is either attempting to learn how to drive or recently acquired their driver’s license, Teen Driver is the perfect learning tool, even allowing you to set rules remotely so that your child isn’t speeding, is wearing their seatbelts, and more.
Chevy Safety Assist coming standard means that you don’t need to upgrade to anything higher-tier to make use of advanced safety features like Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Front Pedestrian Braking, among others. Unfortunately, Front Park Assist is not included, but that’s a small caveat in an otherwise incredible safety suite.
Built into the cabin of the 2024 Equinox LS is a 7-inch infotainment center. This infotainment center is not complicated to use and is full of useful features, some of which you’re likely to use every day and some that you may only use some of the time – the standard steering-wheel-mounted controls are a nice touch, too. While some of you may not need a 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot, most drivers have smartphones, so if you own a smartphone and buy the Equinox LS, you’ll have full access to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Not only that, but your Equinox LS will have wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is a brilliant addition that makes the Equinox LS far more appealing from a value perspective. The most useful ports are present, too, with one USB-A, one USB-C, a 12V power outlet, and a 3.5mm Aux input, all accessible from the front of the cabin. It’s also worth noting the 2024 Equinox LS comes with a 6-speaker audio system standard and provides incredible audio clarity.
The standard configuration for the 2024 Equinox LS comes with a 4-way manual driver’s seat with 2-way adjustable head restraints, but even though the LS is the base trim, you can still upgrade this to an 8-way power-adjustable driver’s seat if you opt for the LS Convenience Package. This optional package not only adds the power-adjustable seat but also adds 2-way power lumbar support to the chair, includes a 4.2-inch Driver Information Center display behind the steering wheel next to the gauges, and the glass on the rear of the vehicle is tinted darker for a sleeker aesthetic.

It all starts with the headroom, which the front row of the 2024 Equinox LS has 40 inches of, and the second row supplies a similarly great 38.5 inches. Legroom is an even closer match between the two, with you and the person next to you having 40.9 inches of legroom, with the back row only being brought down to 39.9 inches. The shoulder room of the 2024 Equinox LS is fantastic between both rows, and the total amount of hip room tells a similar story, with the front row achieving 57.2 and 54.2 inches of shoulder and hip room, respectively. The seats in the back row provide passengers with 55.5 inches of shoulder room and 51.7 inches of hip room. Ultimately, with a passenger volume of 103.5 cu.ft. and a capacity of only five people, the 2024 Equinox LS is a fantastic vehicle for smaller to moderate-sized households.
With the 2024 Equinox LS being a compact SUV, you can fold down the back seats if you know you won’t be needing them, resulting in a far superior amount of cargo space compared to anything you can achieve with a sedan. If you keep everything as is, which is to say every seat is kept up and the passenger capacity remains at five people, you’ll always have 29.9 cu.ft. of available space. This is not only enough cargo space for any one person and their daily needs, but five people can reasonably store something in the vehicle before reaching the cargo capacity if need be.
However, folding down the back row is where SUVs like the 2024 Equinox LS can truly shine and flex their versatility muscles. When you fold down the back seats in the 2024 Equinox LS, cargo space is increased to 63.9 cu.ft., or a 114% increase over the regular cargo space with the seats in their default posture.
As for the 2024 Equinox LS exterior, the vehicle is modestly sized but still in line with what you’d expect from a compact SUV.
