A lot of people get the idea that “Certified Pre-Owned” is simply a fancy way to say “used,” which is understandable because it can certainly seem that way. Chevy CPO Requirements

As we said, each manufacturer sets its own requirements for certification, so it is important to look at what you can expect from one manufacturer to another. Since Chevy is owned by GM (General Motors), the GM Certification standards apply to all Chevy vehicles––along with models from GMC and Buick. First and foremost, in order for a car to be offered as a Chevy CPO model, it must be less than 6 model years old, and it must have fewer than 75,000 miles on it––plus, it needs to have a clean title. Because of these requirements, vehicles that were driven on a lease are very common among CPO cars due to the short period of ownership, mileage limits, and need to care for them that are stated on a lease.

If those initial requirements are met, then a vehicle has to pass a rigorous 172-point inspection in order to be offered as a Chevy CPO car. This inspection includes the entire vehicle, including the condition of the interior and exterior, the mechanical and electrical systems, and even a road test. All of this is performed by a Chevy inspector going through a standard checklist of 172 items to ensure a vehicle meets the very highest standards.

Finally, any recalls that might apply to the vehicle must be handled before it can be offered as a CPO car. This means the dealership has to make sure that any repairs or service ordered by a recall were performed on the vehicle, or they need to have their service center take care of them. Once all of these requirements have been met, then a dealership can offer a Certified Pre-Owned car to you.
