CPO vs Used
A lot of people get the idea that “Certified Pre-Owned” is simply a fancy way to say “used,” which is understandable because it can certainly seem that way. After all, “pre-owned” by itself is essentially a way to say “used” that sounds a bit nicer, which is why it is typically said by auto dealers. As soon as vehicles are referred to as “Certified Pre-Owned” cars, however, then it is not simply a nicer way of saying “used,” and actually does have some specific meaning behind it.
CPO vehicles are “certified” by the original manufacturer of the vehicle. They are pre-owned or used models, but they are typically only a few years old and tend to have a fairly low amount of miles on them. The specific requirements for certification are set by the manufacturer, and though there are similarities throughout the industry, minor differences typically exist from one automaker to another.
Beyond these requirements, the other major difference between CPO cars and used cars is that CPO models come with benefits and advantages that you will very rarely find on a standard used model. A CPO car, for example, can have warranty coverage from the original manufacturer, which might also include some kind of roadside assistance or other benefits. Finally, it should be noted that Certified Pre-Owned cars are offered only at car dealerships; you will not find them from a private seller across town or someone listing their own vehicle on a website.
Chevy CPO Requirements
As we said, each manufacturer sets its own requirements for certification, so it is important to look at what you can expect from one manufacturer to another. Since Chevy is owned by GM (General Motors), the GM Certification standards apply to all Chevy vehicles––along with models from GMC and Buick. First and foremost, in order for a car to be offered as a Chevy CPO model, it must be less than 6 model years old, and it must have fewer than 75,000 miles on it––plus, it needs to have a clean title. Because of these requirements, vehicles that were driven on a lease are very common among CPO cars due to the short period of ownership, mileage limits, and need to care for them that are stated on a lease.
If those initial requirements are met, then a vehicle has to pass a rigorous 172-point inspection in order to be offered as a Chevy CPO car. This inspection includes the entire vehicle, including the condition of the interior and exterior, the mechanical and electrical systems, and even a road test. All of this is performed by a Chevy inspector going through a standard checklist of 172 items to ensure a vehicle meets the very highest standards.
Finally, any recalls that might apply to the vehicle must be handled before it can be offered as a CPO car. This means the dealership has to make sure that any repairs or service ordered by a recall were performed on the vehicle, or they need to have their service center take care of them. Once all of these requirements have been met, then a dealership can offer a Certified Pre-Owned car to you.
Peace of Mind from Certified Pre-Owned Cars
These requirements might seem pretty severe, but it is all in service to you, our customer, to provide you with the kind of peace of mind you will not find with other used cars. When you drive away in a CPO model, you know that it is in excellent condition and has been well taken care of and serviced. This sort of confidence is quite rare with pre-owned vehicles, and should not be overlooked when considering all of your options.
Beyond that, all Chevy CPO cars also come with a 6-year or 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, plus a 12-month or 12,000-mile bumper-to-bumper limited warranty beyond any remaining original factory bumper-to-bumper warranty. This kind of coverage from the manufacturer––not the dealership, the manufacturer––is something that you simply will not find with other types of used vehicles. It shows you the confidence that Chevy has in its certification process and in the CPO cars they offer.
This powertrain limited warranty coverage also includes 24-hour roadside assistance with anything you need. If you break down, run out of gas, have a flat tire, or find yourself in need of other assistance, you will have someone you can turn to for help. This even includes courtesy transportation for you when you have work done that is covered by your warranty. Finally, a free vehicle history report is provided with all Certified Pre-Owned cars offered by GM and Chevy, so that you know everything we do about the car, truck, or SUV that you are interested in.
