Nobody builds trucks like Chevy, and nobody comes close to Chevy’s great diesel trucks. For years, Chevy has been producing the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD heavy-duty trucks with Duramax turbo-diesel engine option to give you the amazing torque you need to really get the most out of your truck. In 2020, Chevy decided it was time to give drivers that option for the full-size Chevy Silverado 1500 truck as well, making the Silverado the most versatile truck with the greatest number of options on the road today. At DePaula Chevrolet, we are your Chevy 1500 diesel dealer with a great lineup of new, used, and certified pre-owned Chevy trucks equipped with powerful Duramax diesel engines.
The reason why diesels are the engine of choice for many pickup truck drivers is that nothing can compare to the vast amounts of torque generated by a diesel engine. This torque improves the towing and payload capacity of your truck. In addition, diesel fuel is more energy dense, and diesel engines operate at higher compression, making them much more fuel-efficient. This is why you get some really amazing fuel economy numbers with a diesel truck, ones that would be the envy of many compact cars, let alone gasoline trucks in the same class as Silverado 1500!
The Chevy Silverado made its debut in 1998. These first Silverado trucks marked a turning point in the history of Chevy trucks, taking the popular Silverado trim of the C/K Series trucks and making it a model of its own. With one light-duty model and three heavy-duty models to choose from, Chevy gave Silverado buyers a great many options. However, despite having four different gas engines to choose from on the original Silverado 1500, there were no diesel engines available for this truck. If you needed a diesel, you had to go with a heavy-duty Chevy Silverado 2500HD or 3500HD.
Flash forward to 2020, and we see Chevy giving the Silverado 1500 a shot at becoming a diesel truck. The 2020 Silverado 1500 gave drivers the option of buying their model with a powerful 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel I6. This engine utilizes its six cylinders to produce 277 horsepower and generate 460 pound-feet of torque, the same amount as produced by the bigger 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 gas engine on the Silverado 1500. There is one crucial difference: the 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel will provide you with significantly better fuel economy.
The Duramax Turbo-Diesel engine option has proven to be incredibly popular on the Chevy Silverado 1500. Offering incredible fuel efficiency and towing power, this engine is perfect for any serious trucker. This is why the Duramax engine continues to be offered on the Silverado.

Rather than take an existing engine and place it into the Silverado 1500, Chevy opted to design a diesel engine specifically for this truck. As a result, the engineers at Chevrolet went with a balanced inline-six design with hypereutectic aluminum pistons to provide a very smooth performance. This engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission to provide better efficiency while giving you greater control. When equipped with this turbo-diesel engine, the 2021 Silverado 1500 can tow up to 9,500 pounds.
The diesel 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 also has a range of up to 648 miles on a single tank of fuel, thanks to its exceptional fuel economy. If you opt for a rear-wheel drivetrain, you can expect to get 23 miles per gallon in city driving and 33 miles per gallon on the highway, while four-wheel drive will reduce these numbers slightly to 22 miles per gallon in the city and 26 miles per gallon on the highway.
That is not all you stand to get when you buy a 2021 Chevy Silverado with a turbo-diesel engine. You also get Chevy’s Multi-Flex Tailgate. This unique feature offers six different functions, improving access to the trailer bed and making loading and unloading your truck easier than ever. The Multi-Flex Tailgate can also be used to turn your truck’s bed into a standing workstation. This tailgate is also easy to use. Just activate the tailgate with your key fob or the two buttons conveniently mounted on the truck’s tailgate.
Chevy has also made trailering easier than ever with the 2021 diesel Silverado 1500. The model features up to 15 unique camera views, so you can see all aspects of the road, even when you are towing the largest trailers. Chevy has added three unique views available for the 2021 model. This includes a cargo bed zoom view and bed hitch guidance, which will make it easier to hook up your truck when you’re using a gooseneck hitch. The rear trailer view now comes with guidelines and a trailer-angle indicator, so you will have an easier time backing your truck up when you are hitched to a trailer. Finally, the rear side view has been split to provide you with views of the right and left sides of your truck and trailer, with an automatic bias so you can better follow the trailer’s movements when your truck is in reverse.
The 2021 diesel Chevy Silverado also makes towing trailers safer with two new available features. The trailer length indicator helps you make lane changes when towing by showing a red overlay on the image of your Silverado’s center console that is twice the length of your trailer. In this way, you can make sure there are no other vehicles in the path of your truck or trailer. Jack-Knife Alert keeps track of your trailer’s position and will alert you if the system senses that the trailer is about to jack-knife so you can better avoid this dangerous situation.
