Then and Now: Chevrolet Blazer Through the Years

When it comes to iconic American SUVs, the Chevrolet Blazer is a name that resonates with automotive enthusiasts and everyday drivers alike. The Blazer has undergone many changes since its introduction in the late 1960s, but Chevy’s dedication to innovation has remained unchanged.

When it was first introduced in 1969, the Chevrolet Blazer was a full-size SUV with two doors. It was designed to go up against big off-road vehicles like the Jeep CJ series and the Ford Bronco. The first-generation Blazer had a hardtop that could be removed, appealing to those who wanted to feel the wind while driving, and a standard four-wheel drive. Built on the same framework as the C/K-series pickups, it also offered a range of engine choices, including a V6 and a V8.

Changes arrived with the second generation in 1973. This second version of the Chevy Blazer increased in wheelbase and length and shifted the design to include squared-off fender openings and a roll-down tailgate window. With the increase in size, the interior also increased, giving drivers and passengers more room. This new design also changed the roof, making it permanent in the front while offering back passengers a removable roof cap. Another innovative design choice was the available Blazer Chalet. This factory option included a built-in camper unit that added 26 inches to the SUV's length and made it the ultimate outdoor adventure vehicle.

This second generation continued into the 80s, with a refreshed design offered in 1981, as well as a diesel engine option in 1982, adding to the Blazer's wide selection of engine options. In addition, the S-10 Blazer was introduced in 1983. It was a smaller, more compact version that was designed for drivers who wanted a midsized SUV. It was based on the Chevy S-10 pickup and was almost 15 inches shorter and narrower than the full-size Blazer that drivers were used to.

Continuing to shift to meet driver’s needs, the Blazer was refreshed with a more modern look in the early 90s, including the addition of four doors. That wasn’t the only difference. The third-generation Blazer offered a polished, aerodynamic look and was made of a single piece of metal, a far cry from the boxy Blazers of years past. This redesign focused on ease and usefulness, making it a good choice for daily driving, whether you were driving on your own or with your family.

The popularity of this new design prompted a redesign of the full-size Blazer in 1992. This new version offered a steel roof, a longer wheelbase, and improved power thanks to the available 5.7L V8. It also made another significant change a few years later, changing the Blazer name and rebranding the full-size version as the Chevrolet Tahoe in 1995. With Chevrolet now focused on the Blazer as its midsize SUV leader, its next redesign offered drivers standard rear-wheel drive with an available four-wheel drive system. However, things changed again in 2002, when Chevy introduced the Trailblazer as a trim option for the Blazer, signaling the end of an era three years later, the Trailblazer became the new face of Chevy’s midsize SUV lineup.
It wasn’t until 2019 that the Chevrolet Blazer came back into the fray, offering a fifth generation that was more bold and stylish than ever before. It offered drivers cutting-edge technology, better gas mileage, and a comfortable interior, along with the support and reliability of the Chevy brand. Today, the Blazer name is stronger than ever, offering a turbocharged engine, advanced safety features, dynamic connectivity, and more.
