The 2021 Chevy Silverado 1500 not only delivers improved performance from its 4-cylinder and diesel engine options, but it also enhances the usability of the cargo bed and provides 15 unique camera views for easy navigation.
The 2021 Silverado 1500 comes with five engine options to choose from. The most fuel-efficient gas option is a 2.7L turbo I-4, the only 4-cylinder in the segment, paired to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Producing 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque, this small engine allows Silverado owners to maximize payload at 2,280 lbs. When properly equipped, this engine can tow up to 9,300 lbs. Fuel economy is also pretty decent, getting 20 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway when equipped with RWD or 19 MPG in the city and 22 MPG on the highway when equipped with 4WD.
The 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel is also improved for 2021. With an output of 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque, its performance is highlighted by a fuel efficiency of 23 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway with RWD or 22 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway with 4WD. This engine is an excellent choice for achieving long-term fuel savings while achieving a maximum towing capacity of 9,500 lbs.
The Silverado 1500’s best engines are undoubtedly the V8s. A stout 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 can be paired to a 6, 8, or 10-speed automatic transmission, with each delivering slightly different towing and fuel efficiency results. This engine produces 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque. While each configuration of this engine is powerful, the pairing of the 8-speed transmission and RWD will achieve the max towing capacity of 11,500 lbs when properly equipped.
That’s good, but it’s also dwarfed by the 6.2L EcoTec3 V8’s 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque output. The 6.2L engine is available on the High Country, LTZ, LT Trail Boss, and Custom Trail Boss trims. This is the most-capable V8 in the segment with a maximum of 13,300 lbs of towing capacity, making it the obvious choice for Silverado 1500 owners who’ve got a lot of work to do.
The 2021 Silverado 1500 stands out from the other full-size pickups thanks to its multi-function tailgate and suite of camera views. New for 2021 is the Multi-Flex tailgate, a Chevy re-skin of GMC’s 6-function Multi-Pro tailgate. The wheelbase is 4” longer, and the cargo floor is lower, resulting in a significant increase in cargo capacity to 144.7 cu.ft., the best-in-class by a wide margin. Seating for 7-9 passengers, depending on configuration, is also improved with additional leg and headroom for second and third-row passengers.
The Suburban is the best SUV on the market for big families with a lot of stuff. It offers the same 5.3L, 6.2L V8, and 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engines as the Silverado 1500 for some serious towing capability. Even without the Max Trailering package, the Suburban is rated to tow at least 7,700 lbs, and with Max Trailering, it can reach 8,200 lbs, equaling the capability of entry-level Silverado 1500s.

While the Tahoe hasn’t been around for 85 years like the Suburban, it has been the Suburban’s shorter, less-expensive twin since 1999, and that hasn’t changed for 2021.
