The attention system monitors where you’re looking using a camera at the top of the steering column and infrared lights. When the system detects your eyes aren’t on the road, it alerts you with a light in the steering wheel to return your attention to the road. If you repeatedly avert your eyes from the rod, the system adds a series of audible alerts to get your attention and signal that it’s time to take a break from driving.

EVs were once compared to glorified golf carts, having little horsepower for acceleration and less torque for carrying payload. The idea of an electric truck seemed like a pipe dream as recently as 2007. That was when the only EVs were plug-in hybrids like the Volt that were compact sedans designed for fuel efficiency and not hardcore performance. Chevy intends to change all of that with the 2023 Chevy Silverado EV.
It is pretty amazing how we got to this point - an EV pickup truck that carries the legendary Silverado name. The origins of the Silverado were much humbler. The year was 1975, folks were doing the Hustle at the disco, it wasn’t safe to go into the water because of Jaws, and Chevrolet wanted a new luxury trim for its C10 half-ton pickup truck. The name the team at Chevy came up with was Silverado, meaning “city of silver” in Spanish, much like how the Cadillac El Dorado was named for the fabled Western city of gold.
The concept of luxury in 1975 was quite a bit different from those of today. The Chevy C10 Silverado featured a full-width bench seat with basketweave patterned nylon cloth upholstery and vinyl trim. Chevy wasn’t offering leather seats in a truck back then, but keep in mind that folks were wearing polyester leisure suits with patent leather platform shoes to weddings, communions, and Bar Mitzvahs. You could get your C10 Silverado with custom vinyl bucket front seats if that was your preference. In addition, you could choose to add an 8-track or cassette player to your C10’s AM/FM stereo so you wouldn’t have to be bothered flipping through stations trying to find an Eagles or Led Zeppelin song for cruising music. Yes, this was state-of-the-art in 1975.
The response to the Silverado trim was so great that the team at Chevy decided to make the Silverado a truck of its own. In 1999, Chevy introduced the Silverado 1500, built on the GMT800 platform. This was a more rugged and aerodynamic look than the previous C/K Series while still continuing many of the design details of the Silverado trim.
Chevy also made those first-generation Chevy Silverado 1500 trucks much more powerful than the model it replaced. The Chevy C10 came with a standard 250 horsepower I-6 gas engine with an available 350 horsepower V8 that could produce up to 250 pound-feet of torque. The 1999 Chevy Silverado 1500 came equipped with a standard 5.3-liter Vortec V8 engine that produces 270 horsepower and produces 320 pound-feet of torque. While the horsepower was slightly less than the V8 on the C10, it more than made up for it in torque, which is often a more important statistic for trucks. This is because the engine torque can be converted into the strength to tow heavier trailers and carry more payload in the bed.
In addition to the Silverado 1500, Chevy came out with a line of heavy-duty Silverado trucks. These 2500 and 3500 models provided drivers with more horsepower and torque in a larger body, giving them more towing and payload capacity than the half-ton Silverado 1500 model.
Since the dawn of the new millennium, Chevy has introduced four great generations of the Silverado truck. The key was making incremental improvements from year to year, followed by the introduction of a remodel, signaling the introduction of a new generation of Silverado 1500. Throughout the truck’s evolution, Chevy made sure to offer its customers a great choice of options so you could customize your Silverado without having to pay a premium.
One way Chevy accomplishes this by giving you a choice of three different cab styles. The Regular Cab has one row of seats and two full-size doors, with room for up to 3 passengers. The Double Cab gives you two rows of seats with two full-size and two half doors, with enough room for 6 passengers. The Crew Cab is the largest of the three, with four full-size doors and a very roomy interior. While the Crew Cab gives you the most room, the Regular Cab Silverado will be able to tow heavier trailers and carry more payload since there is more weight distributed to the rear of your truck. The Double Cab provides a happy medium for drivers who want the best of both worlds in their Silverado.
The generational changes showed Chevy putting more power and more options in each new Silverado model. For example, the second generation Silverado introduced in 2007 boosted the standard 5.3-liter V8 engine to greater 315 horsepower and 338 pound-feet of torque over the first generation model. In addition, Chevy began offering additional engine options, like a 4.3-liter V6 gas engine introduced for the third generation in 2014, a 2.7-liter Turbocharged I-4 for the 2019 fourth generation, and a 3.0-liter Duramax I-6 turbo-diesel on the 2020 Silverado 1500 model.
Chevy also increased the options, adding new trims to each generation. For those who love off-roading, you can get a Silverado 1500 with the Z71 package that adds features like skid plates and locking differentials for better trail performance. The 2021 Silverado is available in the High Country top luxury trim. This has a gorgeous leather interior with wood trim accents, leaving all that Day-Glo basketweave nylon back in the 70s.
All 2021 Silverado 1500 models come with a version of the Chevrolet Infotainment 3 system that seamlessly combines critical truck information, entertainment features, and smartphone connectivity into one great package. Gone are the days of shoving an 8-track into your truck’s dashboard! The Chevy Silverado 1500 sure has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a luxury trim level on a half-ton truck.
The future is now for Chevrolet, and that future is electric. With the Bolt EV and EUV, Chevy has shown a streak of innovation, producing forward-looking vehicles that are also affordable to average drivers. With the 2023 Silverado EV, Chevy will apply this technology to the Silverado pickup truck.

If so, then we could be looking at a truck with up to 1,000 horsepower and 11,500 pound-feet of torque, exceeding anything currently available from any other automaker. Fueling this speculation is the fact that the Silverado EV will be built at the same Factory ZERO assembly plant in Detroit and Hamtramck, Michigan as the Hummer EV, utilizing GM’s revolutionary Ultium Platform. The future truly is electric and bright for the Silverado!
