Chevy Lease Return Steps

Leasing a Chevy is a lot like renting an apartment. You’re paying to use the vehicle for a period of time and agree that it isn’t yours to modify. In other words, Chevy expects the vehicle to be returned as close to its original condition as possible. If it isn’t, you’ll have to pay certain fees for wear and use or mileage overages. To mitigate these penalties and to help you get the most out of your lease, Chevy outlines the end-of-lease process in a few simple steps.

Step #1 - Get Inspected

The first step in returning your Chevy lease starts about four months from your end-of-lease date. Around this time, you’ll want to self-inspect the vehicle using Chevrolet’s Wear-and-Use card that outlines what the automaker considers normal or excessive. For example, Chevy allows for up to four dings that measure less than two inches on each panel, while anything more or larger is excessive. As you inspect the vehicle, make a note of areas that fall under “excessive use.”

We also encourage our customers to schedule their complimentary pre-return inspection around this time. While inspecting the vehicle yourself is a great way to plan for repairs, our certified technicians can help you identify other repairs that may need to be resolved before you return the vehicle. By giving yourself four months in advance, you’ll have plenty of time to get the repairs made.

Step #2 - Start Shopping

With two months left on your lease, you’ll want to start exploring your end-of-lease options. We encourage you to visit the dealership and look through our inventory to see what catches your eye. Go ahead, test drive a few models, and look at your budget to determine what best suits your financial needs – buying your current leased vehicle, leasing another model, or buying a new Chevy.

Step #3 - Check It Off the List

Chevy’s Lease Return Checklist is a great guide for ensuring your vehicle is ready for return to our dealership. You’ll start by cleaning the vehicle inside and out, which means removing all your personal items like sunglasses, garage door remotes, phone chargers, parking passes, etc. It’s also important to clear your personal data from the vehicle, which means unpairing your phone from the infotainment system and unlinking garage door codes from integrated remotes, if applicable.

Once your personal items and data are cleared from the vehicle, it’s time to make sure the equipment that came with the vehicle is present. This includes keys and key fobs, as well as the owner’s manual. If you removed any parts from the vehicle, you will want to reinstall them. For instance, you want to make sure the original manufacturer wheels are on the vehicle. Other items or original equipment may include entertainment system headphones, power-charging cables for electric vehicles, and floor mats.

Step #4 - Return It

Returning your vehicle is easy with DePaula Chevrolet. Once you return your lease, we’ll go over the vehicle and revisit your lease terms. As we do, you’ll want to verify the mileage and the final paperwork, as this reflects how the vehicle was returned. Your final invoice will show all amounts due on the lease account, including excessive wear or mileage charges, the disposition fee, taxes, and other associated fees. If you have any money remaining from your security deposit, the funds will be returned within 60 days of the end of your lease.

Know Your Options: Lease or Buy

The end of your lease is an exciting time, but you don’t want to wait too long before you decide your next steps. We recommend looking at your options about a year before your lease ends. This will give you plenty of time to make the best decision based on your driving and financial needs. So, what are your options?

Option #1 - Purchase Your Leased Chevy

You’ve fallen in love with your Chevy lease and can’t imagine getting rid of it or driving another model. You have the option to purchase your leased vehicle at any point during your lease. Just reach out to our dealership to get the final purchase price and take the next steps to purchase your leased Chevy.

Option #2 - Lease a New Chevy

While you like your leased Chevy, you’re ready for something new, and you still love the idea of driving the latest Chevy every few years. This makes leasing another Chevy the best option for you. Just head on over to our dealership and shop from our inventory of new Chevys to find the perfect model to lease next.

Option #3 - Buy a New Chevy

You’re ready to take the next big step and buy a Chevy. Leasing is a great way to get to know a brand and how a vehicle performs. Many lease customers eventually choose to invest in a vehicle outright, which allows them to build equity and add to their assets. The DePaula Chevrolet team can explain the benefits of buying a Chevrolet as well as your finance options and the many ways we’re here to make the car-owning experience enjoyable and stress-free.
