The Birth of a Titan
General Motors has been a part of the American automobile industry almost from the start. GM’s history dates all the way back to 1908, when it was founded by the famed industrialist William Durant. Durant had made his fortune selling horse-drawn carriages, but he recognized the potential of the automobile and entered that industry in 1904 with the purchase of Buick. After turning that formerly failing company into a market leader, Durant decided to expand his business empire by purchasing other automobile manufacturers. However, unlike many other industrialists, Durant did not desire to simply merge the companies that he acquired into Buick.
Instead, Durant founded GM to act as a holding company so that every manufacturer that he owned could continue to act independently. In the same year that GM was created, Oldsmobile joined Buick as the second member of Durant’s growing automotive empire. Over the next two years, GM bought up seven additional minor manufacturers and formed GMC by combining two of the truck manufacturers that it had acquired, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and the Reliance Motor Car company. However, GM had over extended itself, and a failed attempt to take over Ford led to Durant’s ouster by his investors.
Chevrolet and GM
But when Durant was forced out of GM, he immediately began plotting his return and soon found a powerful ally in the form of the Swiss race car driver Louis Chevrolet. In 1911, this duo, backed by several of Durant’s old business partners, founded a new automobile manufacturer, the Chevrolet Motor Company. The combination of Durant’s business talent and Chevrolet’s automotive knowledge proved to be a resounding success, and by 1916 the new company had given Durant the leverage he needed to retake control of GM. And while Durant soon left for good, Chevy became the backbone of GM.
Over time, Durant’s original idea of allowing all of GM’s brands to compete against each other was replaced by a more structured organization where each brand was targeted at a specific market segment. In this scheme, Chevy was chosen as the budget brand, but its many iconic vehicles soon overshadowed those of its theoretically higher end siblings. With unrivaled designs from the Corvette to the Suburban, Chevy was clearly capable of far more than budget cars and quickly expanded beyond its designated niche. However, that success somewhat came at the cost of the other GM brands.
While the GM family at one point included a bewildering number of manufacturers, the blurring of their hierarchy combined with the increased competition of the modern automobile market has forced GM to consolidate down to four main brands. These are Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac. Chevy is the undisputed pillar of GM, and it sells twice as many vehicles as the other three GM brands combined. Chevy is also the only GM brand to sell cars, trucks, and SUVs, as well as the only one to manufacture sports cars. Buick and Cadillac build cars and SUVs, while GMC produces SUVs and trucks.
Chevy and GM Products Today
Here at DePaula Chevrolet, we sell the full lineup of new Chevy cars, trucks, and SUVs. No matter what you are in the market for, Chevy has a vehicle that fits your needs. If you are looking for a good place to start, then check out Chevy’s SUV models. These versatile vehicles provide an excellent blend of comfort and capability. Two of our most popular sellers are the two-row Chevy Equinox and the three-row Chevy Traverse. However, if a larger vehicle is required, then the iconic full-size Chevy Tahoe and Chevy Suburban can satisfy almost any driver.
Alternatively, you may be interested in something even more rugged, such as the best-selling Chevy Silverado. This mighty truck comes in countless configurations, and its Heavy Duty variants can haul or tow virtually anything. But despite its capability, the Silverado can even be a comfortable family vehicle, with a large cabin and plenty of luxury features. And for those who desire something a little more compact than even the basic Silverado 1500, there is always the Chevy Colorado midsize pickup.
Finally, there are Chevy’s car models. While cars are increasingly falling out of favor compared to SUVs and trucks, they still offer levels of economy and performance that are unattainable by the larger vehicles. The most popular of the Chevy cars that we sell are the Chevy Malibu midsize sedan and the Chevy Camaro muscle car. But for something truly special, you may want to consider America’s favorite sports car, the Corvette. But in addition to these traditional models, Chevy’s cars also include cutting edge electric vehicles such as the Bolt that will cut your gasoline bill to zero.
But aside from our wide range of new Chevy models, here at DePaula Chevrolet, we also have many pre-owned models from GM’s other brands. GMC, Buick, and Cadillac all produce a variety of cars, trucks, and SUVs that are well worth considering. The best-selling GMC Sierra for instance, offers all the performance of the Chevy Silverado in a more upscale package, while the Buick Encore is one of the most popular subcompact SUVs currently on the market. Finally, for true American luxury, there is the range of Cadillac cars and SUVs. Among these, the Cadillac XT5 compact SUV is a great choice for all-around comfort, while the Cadillac ATS and CTS sedans provide performance and as well as luxury.

Why Visit Our Service Department If a Vehicle Is Performing Just Fine?
Just like we visit the doctor for routine screenings to catch and prevent terminal illnesses, we service our vehicles to catch any minor faults. Our team of technicians is trained to spot potential issues that may arise in your vehicle, along with making sure that all of the vehicle's basic maintenance is up to date. Your vehicle can have potentially harmful underlying issues without showing any obvious signs. If these smaller issues don’t get attention, larger problems are likely to occur, which cost more money and come up without warning. You don't want to be caught with a large engine problem that costs hundreds of dollars when it could have been avoided. That's why we are happy to check your vehicle and make sure that it is in perfect driving condition for you.
Another benefit of scheduling routine visits is that your car’s value will be much better with proper inspections and maintenance.
