2026 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD vs 2026 Ram 2500

When you need to get a lot of work done, nothing beats a powerful full-size truck. With as many options as you have available to you, however, choosing the right one can be tricky. If you narrow things down and compare the 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD vs 2026 Ram 2500, then it becomes easy to see that Chevy gives you greater capabilities and more to enjoy.
Both of these trucks are available with gas and diesel engines, and both deliver impressive performance. However, the engines for the Silverado 2500 HD give you greater towing capacity than the comparable powertrains for the Ram 2500. That can make a big difference when it comes to how much you can get done with your truck each day, and the kind of weight it can handle.
Looking closer, we see that you get more cargo space with the Silverado 2500 HD, thanks to its large beds designed to help you tackle a wide range of tasks. Chevy also offers an incredibly functional tailgate to go with it, plus some of our favorite options for a heavy-duty truck that can leave roads behind and reach even the most remote and challenging job sites.

Power, Performance, and Capabilities

Engines and Performance
Few things are quite as important when looking at a full-size, heavy-duty truck as the kind of power it offers and how that translates into real-world work. Both of these trucks have two engines available: a standard gas powertrain and a diesel option. That makes comparing them pretty easy, so let’s start with the gas engines and see how they stack up.
- Silverado 2500 HD: 6.6L V8 with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque
- Ram 2500: 6.4L V8 with 405 hp and 429 lb-ft of torque
You can see that these are both quite similar in terms of displacement and cylinders, which makes sense for this type of truck. While Ram’s V8 has just slightly more horsepower, Chevy’s V8 has substantially more torque. That horsepower difference is so minimal that you will likely never feel it, but that torque can really matter. So what about their diesel engines?
- Silverado 2500 HD: 6.6L Duramax diesel with 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque
- Ram 2500: 6.7L Cummins diesel with 430 hp and 1,075 lb-ft of torque
Here we see things reversed a bit. Chevy’s diesel engine has more horsepower, which is quite important since diesel engines often lag a bit in horsepower. Ram’s diesel has greater torque, which is noteworthy. But as we look at the capabilities you actually get from these two engines, we will see that Ram fails to put that extra torque to good use.
Towing and Payload
Numbers for horsepower and torque can certainly matter and can help when you are looking at specs for different trucks, but they are not the only important things to consider. Just as vital is how well companies utilize that power for actual capabilities. So let’s check out the towing and payload for these two trucks, starting with their standard engines again.
Silverado 2500 HD Gas:
- 18,700 lbs of towing
- 3,759 lbs of payload
Ram 2500 Gas:
- 17,750 lbs of towing
- 3,930 lbs of payload
You can quickly see that Chevy delivers significantly greater towing potential with its standard gas engine than Ram does. The Ram 2500 can handle a bit more payload, but that difference is less substantial than the difference in how much more towing the Silverado 2500 HD can accomplish.
When we look at these trucks with their diesel engines, then things get even more noteworthy…
Silverado 2500 HD Diesel:
- 22,390 lbs of towing
- 3,850 lbs of payload
Ram 2500 Diesel:
- 20,000 lbs of towing
- 3,600 lbs of payload
We saw before that the Ram’s diesel engine provides greater torque, but here we see how they fail to really utilize that. The Ram 2500 has much lower towing capacity than the Silverado 2500 HD with its diesel engine, and its payload advantage has disappeared, too. Chevy offers far greater towing capacity, and its diesel engine comes out on top overall.
Design and Functionality

Bed Sizes and Cargo Volume
Towing and payload capacity are important considerations, along with the power a truck’s engines can provide. But there are other real-world details worth keeping in mind. Like how well a truck’s bed will work for you. Both of these trucks have two bed lengths available, and they are similar lengths at first glance, but you get much more room to use with the Silverado 2500 HD.
When we first look at the two beds for these trucks, they seem quite similar. The 2026 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD has two options: a 6.9-foot bed and an 8.2-foot bed. Ram offers two beds for the 2026 Ram 2500: a 6.4-foot bed and an 8.2-foot bed. Nearly identical, right? But let’s take a look at the actual cargo volume that you get with these different beds…
2026 Silverado 2500 HD
- 6.9-foot bed: 69.5 cu.ft.
- 8.2-foot bed: 83.5 cu.ft.
2026 Ram 2500
- 6.4-foot bed: 57.5 cu.ft.
- 8.2-foot bed: 74.7 cu.ft.
You can see that there is a tremendous difference that can really matter when it comes to how much you can load into your pickup. Once again, Chevy’s engineers have come out on top with an approach that is incredibly functional and useful. Plus, you get some excellent features with the bed and tailgate that make them easy to use as you get your job done each day.
Bed Features and Tailgates
The extra space Chevy gives you with its two beds is already a massive advantage, but it’s far from over. In recent years, the Silverado series of trucks has had some of the most functional and useful beds on the market, especially with the available Multi-Flex six-function tailgate. Ram has some fine features in the beds of its trucks, but we find them a bit lacking.
In the bed of the Silverado 2500 HD (regardless of the bed size you choose), you get 12 standard tie-downs rated at 500 lbs per corner. That makes it incredibly easy to secure cargo in the back of your truck without worrying about it shifting or coming loose. Available options like LED cargo area and perimeter lighting make it easy to access things at night.
Chevy’s Multi-Flex tailgate gives you numerous functions, including a primary gate with a load stop, an inner gate that folds down for easy access to your cargo, and a full-width step. These features help you do your job even at remote locations. Ram’s truck has available LED cargo lighting and an onboard power system, but little else to make it as functional as we like.
Off-Road Potential and Options

Although heading off-road might not be your main focus with a heavy-duty truck like these two models, we know a lot of people who like them for that kind of thing. We also know a lot of folks who work in forestry or landscaping, who need a pickup that can go just about anywhere. The Ram 2500 can do a pretty good job, but we prefer the rugged options from Chevy.
Dedicated Off-Road Trims
If you are looking for some serious off-road capabilities, then the ZR2 trim for the 2026 Silverado 2500 HD is the way to go. You get a 1.5-inch factory lift with the ZR2, along with Multimatic DSSV dampers. Rounding things out, the ZR2 features steel skid plates, 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tires, and more great features for leaving paved roads behind.
The Ram 2500 has some off-road options, like the Warlock trim with Bilstein shocks and Goodyear DuraTrac tires. There is also a Ram 2500 Power Wagon model that has 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler tires, plus an electronic locking front differential. These models are nice, but we ultimately prefer what Chevy offers and how well its trucks can go anywhere.
Special Editions and Packages
With the Silverado 2500 HD, you can add great off-road features to a couple of different trims, giving you more great options to choose from. The Trail Boss Package includes Z71 shocks and an off-road suspension, plus skid plates, 20-inch wheels wrapped in BFGoodrich all-terrain tires, and more. You can also choose a Z71 Off-Road package with more basic off-road features.
If you want to take the Silverado 2500 HD ZR2 to the next level, then the special ZR2 Bison Edition features high-approach cut steel bumpers, stamped steel skid plates, and much more. We find that Ram lacks these kinds of great options for the Ram 2500, leaving you with fewer ways to go if you need a truck that can take you beyond the comforts of civilization.
