When it comes to compact crossover SUVs, you have a lot of options available to you – looking at every model at once, however, can quickly get overwhelming. We find that comparing just two models at a time makes it a lot easier to see what each one has to offer and how they stack up. For example, if you look at the 2020 Chevy Trax vs 2020 Ford EcoSport, then you can see that while they are very comparable in many ways, the Trax simply comes out on top in some key areas.

You can get better highway fuel economy with the Trax, for example, and its standard engine is more powerful than the standard engine on the 2020 Ford EcoSport. Inside, both of these vehicles are quite well designed, but you can get some better options with the 2020 Chevy Trax. It is also worth pointing out that all-wheel drive is available on all models of the Trax, regardless of which trim you are interested in, while only certain models of the EcoSport allow you to choose. While you get slightly more interior cargo space with the EcoSport, you get more overall passenger space with the Chevy Trax.

At the end of the day, these are both excellent compact crossover SUVs, so finding a clear winner between them can be tricky. It will ultimately come down to your budget, considering exactly what you are looking for, and choosing the right dealership to treat you right and help you get the vehicle you need. Here at DePaula Chevy, we are ready to answer all of your questions and work tirelessly with you to ensure you drive away completely happy with your new vehicle. Available Engines

No matter what kind of vehicle you are looking at, the engine is important and has a huge impact on how it feels to drive it. The 2020 Chevy Trax has a single engine available, so you do not have to worry about weighing your options and hoping to make the right choice. It is a 1.4L Turbo EcoTec 4-cylinder engine that provides up to 138 hp and 148 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. This engine comes with front-wheel drive standard, but you can choose all-wheel drive if you prefer, which is available on any trim of the Trax.

By comparison, the 2020 Ford EcoSport has two engines available, which can be advantageous but also has some drawbacks. The standard engine is a 1.0L EcoBoost engine that offers up to 123 hp and 125 lb-ft of torque. There is also an available 2.0L Ti-VCT engine that delivers up to 166 hp and 149 lb-ft of torque. As you can see, this second engine is more powerful than the one you get in the Chevy Trax, but the standard engine offers less horsepower and torque.

    Drivetrain Options

One important thing to note, however, is that the standard Ford engine comes with front-wheel drive, while the more powerful engine comes with four-wheel drive. There is no option to change that, so if you want more power, then you have to have 4WD, whether you want it or not. And one Ford trim, the SES, comes with the 2.0L engine and 4WD standard, with no option for FWD.

    Fuel Economy

While both vehicles have pretty similar fuel economy, the Trax does come out on top. The 2020 Chevy Trax gets an estimated 26/31 mpg in the city and on the highway; while the 2020 Ford EcoSport with the standard engine gets an estimated 27/29 mpg in the city and on the highway. If you do a lot of highway driving, then the Trax will likely save you some money in the long-run. Plus, the more powerful Ford engine gets an estimated 23/29 mpg, which is quite a bit worse than the fuel economy of the standard Trax.

    Interior Space

When looking at interior space for an SUV, it is important to consider both cargo space and passenger volume, as you are likely to have both in your vehicle. Both the 2020 Chevy Trax and the 2020 Ford EcoSport have room for up to five people, with two seats in the front and second-row bench seating. The Trax gives you a total of nearly 93 cu.ft. of space for passengers inside, while the EcoSport offers about 91 cu.ft. of passenger volume. That might not seem like a huge difference, but if you picture it as three-dimensional space, then you can see that it can make quite a difference.

On the other hand, you get a bit more cargo space in the EcoSport, thanks to more room dedicated for it over your passengers. The EcoSport gives you just over 20 cu.ft. of space behind the rear seats and up to 50 cu.ft. of total cargo volume. By comparison, the 2020 Chevy Trax offers nearly 19 cu.ft. of space behind the rear seats and almost 49 cu.ft. of total cargo volume. It is a minor difference that you are not likely to really take advantage of, but still worth noting.

    Interior Features

Inside, both of these compact crossovers have some great features that are pretty comparable. The 2020 Chevy Trax has an infotainment system with an available Bose Premium sound system, with support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The highest trim, the Premier, features numerous USB ports, leatherette seat details, and a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat, with heated front seats. It also has steering-wheel controls for audio and phone, along with a 3-inch driver information display, 8-point digital compass, remote start, and keyless open.

Inside the 2020 Ford EcoSport, you can get some great features, but they fall a bit short. There is also an infotainment system with an available B&O sound system. The highest trim, the Titanium, features several USB ports and a power outlet, leather details, and a 6-way power adjustable driver’s seat – with heated front seats. With the Titanium, however, keyless entry and remote start are available options, not standard like they are on the Chevy Trax Premier.

  • Safety

Both the 2020 Chevy Trax and the 2020 Ford EcoSport have great standard and available safety features to protect you and your loved ones on the road. While some of these will depend on what trim you look at, that is quite common for these kinds of vehicles. To keep things simple, we will look at what you get with the highest trims on these two vehicles.

    2020 Chevy Trax

The 2020 Chevy Trax Premier includes 10 airbags, StabiliTrak electronic stability and traction control, and LED daytime running lamps, plus it has a side blind zone alert, along with a rear cross traffic alert, and rear park assist. The Trax Premier also has a forward collision alert, lane departure warning, and a tire pressure monitoring system to warn you about potential blowouts and remind you when you need to refill your tires.

    2020 Ford EcoSport

With the 2020 Ford EcoSport Titanium, you get numerous airbags and hill start assist with autolamp headlamps. You also get a blind spot information system and rear cross-traffic alert, along with a reverse sensing system to help with backing up slowly. While the Titanium features rain-sensing automatic windshield wipers to make your life easier, and a tire pressure monitoring system like the Trax, it lacks a lane departure warning and forward collision alert that you can get in the 2020 Chevy Trax. Those are pretty important safety features to not even have as an available option, and one major reason the Trax is an overall safer vehicle.
