Midsize SUVs have become some of the most popular models on the road, a stalwart for drivers looking for an exceptional combination of styling and performance. Two of the top models to compare are the 2022 Chevy Blazer vs 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe. Each has a lot to offer a driver, with choices of front-wheel or all-wheel drive, two different engines, and a great number of trims. The 2022 Santa Fe comes in five different trim levels running from the base model SE to the top-of-the-line Calligraphy, while the 2022 Blazer is offered in four different trims, running from the 2LT to the fully loaded Premier. In addition, Chevy offers three stylish special editions on the 2022 Blazer: the Midnight Edition, Redline Edition, and Sport Edition. The main change from the prior year is the discontinuance of the L and 1LT trims, so the entry-level 2LT comes better equipped than most other base-model midsize SUVs in its class.
Chevy reintroduced the Blazer midsize SUV in time for the 2019 model year. Before that, there had been a long run of Blazers dating back to 1969 and continuing through 1995. In contrast, Hyundai didn’t introduce the Santa Fe until the 2000 model year and is currently on the fourth generation of the model, introduced in time for 2018. While both of these models have many similarities that speak well for the two vehicles, there are several key differences that will lead you to the conclusion that the 2022 Chevy Blazer is the better value for your and your family. While Hyundai has built a solid midsize SUV in the Santa Fe, the Blazer burns past it when comparing them head-to-head.
Both the 2022 Chevy Blazer and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe offer drivers the choice of two engines. The key difference is that the engines on the Blazer provide better performance than the comparable ones on the Santa Fe. The base engine on the Chevy Blazer is a 2.0-liter I-4. This engine uses a turbocharger and direct high-pressure fuel injection to maximize performance and automatic stop/start technology to improve fuel economy. This engine is capable of producing 228 horsepower at 5500 rpm and 258 lb-ft of torque at 1500 to 4000 rpm.
There is also a larger 3.6-liter V6 gas engine available on the 2022 Chevy Blazer. This also uses direct high-pressure fuel injection to improve performance and automatic stop/start technology to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. It also features continuously variable valve timing, which will give efficient performance, allowing the engine to provide 308 horsepower at 6700 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque at 5000 rpm.
In contrast, Hyundai has decided to go with two versions of what is basically the same engine on the 2022 Santa Fe. Both are a 2.5-liter I-4 gas engine with multi-port fuel injection and Hyundai’s idle stop & go technology. The key difference is a turbocharger. The base 2.5-liter I-4 engine will give drivers 191 horsepower at 6100 rpm and 181 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. Neither of these numbers matches up favorably with the base engine on the 2022 Chevy Blazer. The Hyundai 2.5-liter I-4 Turbo produces 281 horsepower at 5800 rpm and 311 lb-ft of torque at 4000 rpm. While this does outperform the 2.0-liter Turbo I-4 base engine on the 2022 Blazer, it still can’t match what the 3.6-liter V6 delivers.
Both automakers have taken different approaches with respect to the choice of transmission on their respective midsize SUV models. The Blazer with the 2.0-liter Turbo I-4 is paired with a Hydra-Matic 9T60 9-speed automatic transmission, while Chevy has chosen to go with a Hydra-Matic 9T65 9-speed automatic transmission on the 2022 Blazer with the 3.6-liter V6 gas engine. Either way, you are getting nine gear ratios, giving you greater control over your Blazer’s engine performance. Hyundai decided to go with an 8-speed automatic transmission on the Santa Fe with the base 2.5-liter and an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission with the turbocharged 2.5-liter. Both feature shift-by-wire technology and SHIFTRONIC manual shift paddle shifters, but the lack of an extra gear may result in reduced control and engine efficiency.
The 2022 Chevy Blazer and 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe offer drivers excellent fuel economy for vehicles in the midsize SUV class. The Santa Fe has a slight edge, averaging 26 miles per gallon with the base 2.5-liter engine and front-wheel drive, 25 miles per gallon on the model with the 2.5-liter Turbo with front-wheel drive, and 24 miles per gallon with all-wheel drive and either engine. The Blazer with the 2.0-liter Turbo I-4 matches these numbers averaging 25 miles per gallon with front-wheel drive and 24 miles per gallon with all-wheel drive. If you choose a Blazer with the larger 3.6-liter V6, your fuel economy will slip slightly to 22 miles per gallon with front-wheel drive and 21 miles per gallon with all-wheel drive.
One thing that is a nice bonus to these two midsize SUVs is the ability to tow trailers when equipped with the proper hitch equipment. However, there is one clear favorite in this regard, and it is the 2022 Chevy Blazer. The Blazer with the 2.0-liter I-4 engine can tow up to 3,500 pounds, while choosing the available 3.6-liter V6 increases your trailering capacity up to an astounding 4,500 pounds. In contrast, the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe with the base 2.5-liter can only tow 2,000 pounds, and the one with the 2.5-liter Turbo tops out at 3,500 pounds.
For 2022, Chevy has decided to equip all models of the Blazer with its Chevy Safety Assist suite of six advanced driver assistance technologies. Forward Collision Alert will sound a warning if the system detects that you may collide with the vehicle in front of you. If this occurs, then the system will engage the Emergency Braking system to bring your Blazer to a stop, avoiding a collision or minimizing the impact of a crash. This is similar to the Front Pedestrian Braking system, which is designed to detect when a pedestrian is crossing the path of your Blazer and engage the emergency brakes to avoid hitting the pedestrian. There is also a Following Distance Indicator, which will advise you if you are getting too close to the vehicle in front of your Blazer.
There are other ways that Chevy Safety Assist can help you when driving your Blazer. For example, Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning will advise if you start to drift out of your lane on a marked road. The system will use slight adjustments to your Blazer’s steering to keep you on the straight and narrow. IntelliBeam Auto High Beam Assist will come in handy when you are traveling in your Blazer at night. When you reach an unlit part of the road, IntelliBeam will automatically turn on your Blazer’s high beams to give you better visibility and then turn them off when you reach a better lit area or if it detects another vehicle.
Chevy has also equipped every 2022 Blazer with its Teen Driver technology. This is especially helpful if you are a parent with a young driver in your family. Teen Driver will make it impossible to disengage certain safety features on your Blazer, prevent the driver from putting the Blazer in gear if any passengers aren’t wearing their seatbelts, and even limit the volume on the Chevy Infotainment system. Finally, Teen Driver acts as a chaperone, providing you with a post-trip report on your young driver’s performance.
Hyundai has given the 2022 Santa Fe a set of standard safety features as part of the Hyundai SmartSense driver assistance platform. The Highway Driving Assist, Lane Keeping Assist, and Lane Following Assist technology on the Hyundai Santa Fe will all operate like Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning on the Blazer. Similarly, Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection on the Santa Fe act like the Blazer’s Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, and Automatic Braking features. Finally, the High Beam Assist is Hyundai’s version of Chevy’s IntelliBeam automatic high beams. Just like on the Blazer, each of these will help improve the safety of the driver and passengers in the Santa Fe. However, Hyundai does not offer a comparable system to the Chevy Teen Driver feature. This could prove to be an important difference for families looking to buy a vehicle for use by a young driver in the household.
One reason why people choose a two-row, midsize SUV is the ability to comfortably seat up to five passengers while still having room for cargo, luggage, sporting equipment, or whatever else you need to carry. Both the 2022 Chevy Blazer and the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe provide plenty of room for you and four other people, as well as solid trunk space, making either one ideal for long road trips. In addition, both allow you to easily fold down the rear seats to free up additional trunk space. Interestingly enough, while there is more interior cargo and passenger space in the Santa Fe, you wouldn’t know that sitting in the Blazer, as the designers at Chevrolet have figured out novel ways to maximize interior space on Chevy’s midsize SUV.
The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe has slightly more passenger space than the 2022 Chevy Blazer. The Santa Fe provides 111.5 cubic feet of space in the passenger compartment, compared to 107.8 cubic feet on the 2022 Blazer. However, when you look at the actual seating space, the numbers are quite close. For example, there are 39 inches of headroom in the rear seat of the Santa Fe, compared to a fairly comparable 38.6 inches on the Blazer. Similarly, rear-seat passengers in the Santa Fe get 41.7 inches of legroom, just slightly more than the 39.6 inches on the Blazer. However, while both vehicles provide 59.1 inches of shoulder room in the front row of seats, the Blazer actually gives you 58.6 inches of shoulder room in the back seat, more than the 58.3 inches in the Santa Fe. As a result, both vehicles should be more than comfortable for you and passengers, even on long drives.
The two midsize SUVs are also fairly comparable when it comes to trunk space. The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe provides more overall space than the 2022 Chevy Blazer, but this may be due to the Santa Fe having a slightly higher profile than the Blazer. In any event, the Blazer’s trunk can fit up to 30.5 cubic feet of cargo, while the Santa Fe can carry up to 36.4 cubic feet of cargo. This is similar to the difference when the rear seats are folded down. Still, the 64.2 cubic feet of maximum cargo space in the Blazer should be more than sufficient for you to move whatever you need.
