For a lot of people, a powerful and hard-working truck is essential to being able to get your job done. Whether you need a pickup that you can count on every day to get you to a job site, or you are looking for something with a lot of muscle in it for doing some serious towing, a bold heavy-duty truck is a great solution. You have quite a few options available to you for this sort of truck, however, so it helps to take a look at one or two of them at a time to see how they stack up. When comparing the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD vs 2022 Ford F-250, we can see that both have a lot to offer, but the Chevy model gives you more.
One important thing to note is that both of these trucks have a lot of options available, with several different trims, cab sizes, bed lengths, and engines. All of these great upgrades and features can make a big difference in terms of the performance you get and your overall driving experience, but they can also add a great deal to the price of your truck. If you are on a budget or trying to keep your business costs down while still getting a fantastic heavy-duty pickup, then the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is your best option. While both trucks start with gas-powered V8 engines rather than diesel, the Chevy engine is far better, with more horsepower and torque.
The superior standard engine of the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD translates into better performance and capability, including more towing and payload capacity than the Ford F-250 with its standard engine. A more-powerful gas V8 engine is offered on the F-250, but you have to pay more for it, while the standard engine in the Silverado 2500 HD is a fantastic choice. The standard bed on the Chevy truck is also larger and designed to give you more cargo space than the F-250 with its standard bed––in fact, even with the available longer beds, the Silverado 2500 HD still offers greater cargo space. Combine all of that with a much larger standard infotainment display, which makes using your truck easier, and you get superior performance for your money than Ford offers.
If you look at nothing else a truck has to offer, the single most important factor to consider is the engine in your pickup. As the heart of your vehicle, so much of your driving experience depends on the engine, so it is the best place to start as you are shopping for your next truck. The Chevy Silverado 2500 HD has two engines to offer, while the Ford F-250 has three, which can make directly comparing them a bit tricky. To keep things simple, let us take a look at the standard gas engines that both trucks start with and see how they compare in terms of the performance you will get from your pickup.
Looking at Ford, we can see the 2022 F-250 starts with a 6.2L gas V8 engine that delivers 385 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. This comes paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission for a good overall driving experience, and it is a fine engine to start with. While this engine can get some jobs done, we cannot help but feel that it falls short of the kind of power that a heavy-duty truck really should start with. Ford would seem to agree with us since they also offer a second gas engine with more power, though you will have to pay extra for it, as well as a diesel option.
Chevy keeps things simple, however, as they have only their standard gas engine and an available diesel option. The standard engine on the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD is a 6.6L gas V8 that delivers 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. You can see that this is both more horsepower and more torque than the standard engine on the Ford truck. The numbers might not be huge, but every bit makes a difference, and that torque is significant for daily driving––especially when pushing up a hill––and for towing. The available diesel engine on the Silverado 2500 HD is also impressive, and the refined engine options make getting the best heavy-duty truck simpler than with Ford’s F-250.
Although plenty of people use their pickup for play, we know that most of our customers interested in a heavy-duty option like the Silverado 2500 HD need a truck that can handle some serious work. That work often takes the form of hauling everything you need with you to a job site. Whether that is a trailer full of materials, like lumber or sheets of drywall, or simply being able to toss your toolboxes and some bags of concrete or sand into the bed, you need a truck that you can rely on to handle whatever weight you need it to.
The towing and payload capacities you get from a heavy-duty truck depend on numerous factors like the size of the bed and cab you choose, the engine you pick, and whether you go with two-wheel or four-wheel drive. To keep things simple, let us look at the standard engine and options on these two trucks and see what kind of capability you can get without spending more on your next pickup. The Ford F-250, with its standard 6.2L gas V8 engine, can handle up to 15,000 lbs of conventional towing. If you are interested in gooseneck or fifth-wheel towing, then it can pull up to 15,800 lbs, but for most towing setups, 15,000 lbs is the limit with the base engine.
With the 2022 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD and its standard 6.6L V8 engine, you can pull up to 17,370 lbs of weight behind you. As you can see, that is a significant difference of more than 2,000 lbs compared to conventional towing with the Ford F-250 and its standard engine. Sometimes the difference in towing between two trucks is only a few pounds and will never really matter, but 2,000 lbs is a tremendous difference and can easily come into play if you need the most from your truck. The Silverado 2500 HD can also handle up to 3,979 lbs of payload with its standard engine.
As you are considering your next truck, it is worthwhile to take a moment and look beyond things like performance and towing to see what your driving experience will be like. Looking at the standard features on these two trucks, we can see that Chevy’s pickup once again comes out on top. For example, the starting trim of the Ford F-250 comes with a 2.3-inch LCD instrument cluster display and a 4.2-inch infotainment display on the center of the dashboard. It comes with a smart-charging USB port, though features like power windows and door locks are options on the F-250’s starting trim, not standard.
With the Chevy Silverado 2500 HD, you get great options standard on every model, including power windows and programmable power door locks. A 7-inch infotainment display is standard, though an 8-inch screen is found on higher trims, and you get a 3.5-inch Driver Information Center display. You get 4-way adjustable front seats and a pair of USB ports for charging or streaming audio. Bluetooth is also supported for up to two compatible devices to make listening to your music or following navigation instructions from your phone easier. A Hitch Guidance system is also standard on every Silverado 2500 HD, which displays a guideline on the Rear Vision Camera display while you are in reverse to make it easier to line up and connect to a trailer for towing.
