Competitive midsize pickup trucks are big business for big automakers, and two very popular entries in the segment are the Chevy Colorado and the Nissan Frontier. When comparing the 2023 Chevy Colorado vs 2023 Toyota Frontier across a number of facets, you can see that both trucks have a lot to offer, but one comes out on top in some key areas that will surely help make the shopping process easier for those interested in buying a new truck. Overall, for 2023, both midsize pickups offer a number of enticing new features.

The 2023 Nissan Frontier is available across four different trim formats, starting with the S, followed by the SV, PRO-X, and PRO-4X. The Frontier also adds two new packages for the model year in the form of a Midnight Edition available for the SV Crew Cab and the Convenience Package for the SV. The two new packages include exterior and basic standard equipment. The Midnight Edition offers 17-inch black-painted alloy wheels, along with black bumpers, a blackened grille, Midnight Edition badging, and black outside mirrors. The Midnight Edition also features an LED lighting array and black interior accents. The Convenience Package adds a spray-in bedliner, a Utili-Track System with adjustable tie-down cleats, under-rail bed lighting, a heated leather steering wheel, and heated front seats.

The 2023 Chevy Colorado brings some truly fascinating new features to its line-up, including three off-road iterations across five different trims. The trim line-up includes the WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71, and ZR2. New for the model year is a complete powertrain overhaul, along with all-new cargo bed functionality, all-new cargo bed storage, and all-new tailgate utility. Additionally, the infotainment system and interior have been vastly upgraded, with all-new full-color HD touchscreen displays and a fully digital instrument cluster that's customizable. The 2023 Colorado is new and big in many ways, making it one of the best model-year outings for the nameplate.

  • Performance

For most truck owners, the engine is the heart of every pickup. You won't be able to accomplish much without an appropriate powertrain, and when it comes to the Chevy Colorado and Nissan Frontier, the Colorado easily takes the lead here. The Frontier only has one engine, while the Colorado has three engine options to choose from. So you get more customizable power with the Chevy Colorado.

    The Frontier's Sole Engine Option

With the 2023 Nissan Frontier, you have a 3.8-liter V6 that delivers up to 310 hp at 281 lb-ft of torque with a 9-speed automatic transmission. You can get the Frontier in either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive for maximum off-roading potential. You have multiple drive modes for the four-wheel drive iteration, including 2WD, 4HI, 4LO, and hill descent control, along with a limited-slip differential for all four wheels.

The Colorado's Array of Engine Options

The Frontier's single powertrain is adequate for what it is, and the truck comes with some great performance features, but it's not quite on par with the Colorado's offerings. With the Colorado, you have a variety of three different turbocharged 4-cylinders, all with a 2.7-liter displacement. However, two of those three powertrains easily top out. Performance-wise, over the Frontier, the 2.7-liter Turbo Plus 4-cylinder provides 310 hp at 390 lb-ft of torque, giving you more off-the-line and low-end power for your towing, trailering, rock crawling, or off-road needs. Additionally, the 2.7-liter High-Output 4-cylinder provides 310 hp at 430 lb-ft of torque, giving you nearly 35% more torque out of the gate than the Nissan Frontier.

    Fuel Economy

By comparison, more power and performance can be gained out of the Colorado, which also applies to fuel efficiency. If you gauge performance based on longevity, the Colorado also manages to one-up the Frontier in that department regarding gas mileage. The Frontier manages up to 18 MPG in the city and up to 24 MPG on the highway in rear-wheel drive, while in four-wheel drive, you get 17 MPG in the city and up to 22 MPG on the highway.

With the Colorado, the entry-level 4-cylinder offers the best gas mileage between the two trucks, at 20 MPG in the city and up to 25 MPG on the highway in rear-wheel drive, and up to 19 MPG in the city and 23 MPG on the highway in four-wheel drive. So you just get more out of the 2023 Colorado compared to the 2023 Frontier.

  • Capabilities

The prime reason most people want a pickup truck is so that they can tow, carry, and haul cargo and equipment regularly. The truck needs very capable towing and hauling ratings in order to get the most out of the truck, and in this case, the 2023 Colorado definitely gets the edge over the 2023 Frontier. This is due to the improved performance and design of the Colorado.

    The Frontier's Capabilities

When it comes to the Frontier's trailering capability, Nissan's midsize pickup can manage up to 6,690 lbs worth of cargo. This gives you a very stable amount of towing and trailering capacity with the Frontier. You also have some notable payload capacity in two different bed sizes, with up to 1,610 lbs worth of cargo. Even though the Frontier has impressive capabilities, it doesn't quite measure up to the Chevy Colorado.

    The Colorado's Capabilities

The Colorado is capable of trailering up to 7,700 lbs worth of cargo when properly equipped, which gives you a lot more towing capabilities than the Frontier. There is nearly a 1,000 lb difference between the two when it comes to towing capacity, and that edge clearly goes to the Colorado. The same also applies to the two trucks when comparing the payload capacity. The Colorado is capable of hauling up to 1,648 lbs, which is slightly more than what the Frontier is capable of. So you can carry slightly more cargo in the bed of the Colorado compared to the Frontier.

  • Technology

The grey interior of a 2023 Chevy Colorado shows the steering wheel and infotainment screen.

When it comes to the technology of these two midsize trucks, the 2023 Chevy Colorado manages to not only hold its own against the 2023 Nissan Frontier; it manages to offer more in terms of some of its infotainment capabilities. When you're looking at it from the perspective of digital clusters and HD touchscreens, the 2023 Frontier offers two different size screens based on the trim level, with the lower-end trims offering an 8-inch HD touchscreen, whereas the upper-end trim level offers up to a 9-inch HD touchscreen.

The Colorado's Superior HD Infotainment Touchscreen

The Chevy Colorado, however, has a standard issue touchscreen display in its center console across every trim, and the best part about the Colorado's infotainment offerings is that every HD touchscreen is 11.3-inches, giving you more screen space to access and more ways to interact with your apps and media compared to the Frontier. The Colorado also comes with Google Built-In, a suite of functions that make it easy to access navigation services, vehicle health, as well as your favorite podcasts and playlists.

    Safety Features

Even though the Frontier has some impressive tech, including a complete safety suite in the form of the Nissan Safety Shield 360, such as lots of detection and active assists, it doesn't quite compare to the safety and the off-road technology available in the Colorado. For instance, in addition to the Chevy Safety Assist suite, which includes active safety features, it also comes with up to 10 different camera views made available via the infotainment display for the Z71 and ZR2 models thanks to the underbody cameras.

The Colorado's Innovative Trailering and Off-Road Apps

There is also the Colorado's trailering app that comes with hitch guidance and hitch view, as well as all new performance display information via this new tool. The new off-road performance display app allows you to view off-road statistics and readouts for different types of off-roading, giving the Colorado a significant edge over the competition. While the 2023 Nissan Frontier has a lot of great off-road tech via the PRO-X and PRO-4X, it still comes up short compared to the 2023 Chevy Colorado.
