For many people, a small crossover is the perfect vehicle as it provides the functionality and style of an SUV but in a compact size that is easier to fit into your life. Even if you know this type of vehicle is right for you, you still have to choose the perfect one to meet your needs. Looking at the 2023 Chevy Equinox vs 2023 Honda CR-V, we can see that they have a lot in common and can both work well for many drivers. That being said, while the CR-V is a fine vehicle with a lot to offer, the Chevy Equinox gives you more to enjoy at a lower starting price.

Both crossover SUVs have fantastic standard and available safety features to keep you safe and protect you and your loved ones while on the road. You get the Chevy Safety Assist suite of features standard on every 2023 Equinox, while the CR-V comes with Honda Sensing standard, providing similar features to keep people safe. The Chevy model offers a few things you cannot find on the CR-V, such as Teen Driver technology, which comes standard on every Equinox and includes special settings you can use to help new drivers learn safe habits and reinforce what you teach them. There is nothing similar to this available feature from Honda, which is a big missed opportunity.

Similarly, the Chevy Equinox and the Honda CR-V have great technology features, including standard 7-inch Infotainment displays and six-speaker sound systems. Some key differences between them give the Equinox the edge; for example, the Equinox starts with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support in every model, while that is an available option for the CR-V only found in higher trims. Not only do you get more standard features overall with the Equinox, but it has more available with two impressive special editions for you to choose from, while the CR-V is stuck with standard trims and nothing more.

  • Safety

When shopping for your next vehicle, nothing is more important than how well it can protect you and keeps you safe on the road. No amount of power or great fuel efficiency matters if you and your loved ones are not safe while running errands, getting through your daily commute, or enjoying a long road trip. Fortunately, Chevy and Honda understand that, and you can find impressive standard safety features on the Equinox and the CR-V. While we prefer the Equinox, we are always happy to see other brands deliver safe vehicles. Ultimately, Chevy gives you more to help protect you, and it is clear they truly understand the importance of safety technology.

    Standard Features

For starters, the Equinox comes with the Chevy Safety Assist package of advanced safety technology and features standard on every model. This includes a forward collision alert with automatic emergency braking to help you avoid a crash or lessen the severity of an impact, as well as front pedestrian braking and lane keep assist with a lane departure warning to help you stay in your lane while driving. Similarly, the CR-V comes with the Honda Sensing suite of technology and features standard in every model, which includes a collision mitigation braking system, a road departure mitigation system, and a lane keeping assist system similar to what you get with the Chevy Equinox.

    The Equinox's Additional Features

Where Chevy goes further is with advanced features like its Teen Driver system that comes standard on all Equinox models. This lets you assign a particular key fob to activate certain features for your teen driver, such as limiting the volume of music, keeping the vehicle in park unless the driver’s seat belt is engaged, and providing you with an in-vehicle report card to let you know about issues you should discuss with your young driver and reinforce. There is nothing from Honda similar to this system, and if you have a new driver who will be learning or using your vehicle, then the Equinox is perfect. There is also an available HD surround vision system for the Equinox that gives you a virtual look around your vehicle when maneuvering at low speeds; the Honda CR-V lacks a similar option.

  • Technology

The grey interior of a 2023 Chevy Equinox shows the steering wheel and infotainment screen.

When it comes to enjoying your vehicle and getting the most from your time behind the wheel, modern technology has made driving a lot more fun and relaxing. Both the Chevy Equinox and Honda CR-V have an impressive selection of tech features, but Chevy pushes ahead with a few things that we feel give it an advantage. When you consider how much lower the starting price on the Equinox is compared to the CR-V, it makes even minor differences in standard features that much more remarkable.

    Available Features

For example, inside the Equinox and the CR-V, you will find a 7-inch infotainment display as the standard option on starting trims. There are larger screens available for both models if you look at higher trims, but to begin with, they have the same size display. Similarly, both models feature a six-speaker sound system as the standard option, with advanced audio systems available on higher trims. In fact, Bose premium sound systems are available for both of these models. Part of the infotainment system on both models includes support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can easily stream music while you drive.

    The Equinox's Connectivity Advantage

Where the Chevy Equinox gets the advantage, however, is that it supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto functionality as a standard feature in all models. By comparison, wireless capability is an available option for the CR-V. Honda only includes it on the highest two trims, so starting trims miss out on wireless functionality completely. With the Equinox starting at an MSRP that is nearly $5,000 less, getting more tech features and options while spending less money is hard to argue with.

  • Special Editions

A grey 2023 Chevy Equinox is shown driving on an open road during a 2023 Chevy Equinox vs 2023 Honda CR-V.

Both the Chevy Equinox and the Honda CR-V have numerous trim levels available so that you can look at what they offer and choose the configuration that delivers everything you want. In fact, both of these models have the same number of trims with four different levels available: the Equinox has the LS, LT, RS, and Premier trims, while the CR-V comes as an EX, Sport Hybrid, EX-L, or Sport Touring Hybrid model. What Honda lacks, however, is any special edition for you to choose from if you want something that sets your vehicle apart; Chevy has two.

    The Equinox's Exciting Special Editions

For starters, there is the Chevy Equinox Midnight Edition, which is a gorgeous way to make your vehicle stand out in a crowd. The Midnight Edition features 18-inch gloss black aluminum wheels wrapped in all-season blackwall tires. It also has front and rear black bowtie emblems, body-color mirror caps, and a unique mold-in-color black grille that all comes together to create a striking impression from the moment you first see it. There is also a Chevy Equinox Redline Edition available, based on the high-end Premier trim that introduces some unique touches.

The Redline Edition comes with 19-inch black wheels with red accents and black center caps, wrapped in all-season blackwall tires, which are absolutely gorgeous and provide an immediate, subtle touch of color. You also get front and rear black bowtie emblems, redline decals on the exterior mirrors, and black Equinox badges with red outline in numerous locations for another unique touch. Every Redline Edition model comes with a black window surround, and black door handles outside, while the interior features Black Ice interior accents with a black headliner to create a cohesive look that immediately grabs the eye. The lack of these sorts of special editions for the CR-V means Honda models end up feeling much more similar to each other, while you can make your Equinox truly your own.
