One of the great things about the auto industry these days is that there is something for everyone, giving you a wide range of vehicles to choose from in all shapes and sizes. A subcompact SUV, for example, gives you all of the functionality of an SUV but in a smaller size that can more easily fit into any lifestyle. Trying to choose the right vehicle is not always simple, however, particularly since you have so many different ones to choose from—that is why it helps to compare a couple when you are shopping for an SUV to see how they stack up.

Looking at the 2024 Chevy Trax vs 2024 Subaru Crosstrek, we can see that they actually have quite a lot in common, but there are some very important differences between them. These are both subcompact SUVs with two rows of seating inside for up to five passengers, giving you plenty of room for bringing the people in your life along with you. And yet, there is quite a lot of difference between them in terms of how much cargo space you get, specifically when you look at the rear of the vehicle behind the back seats. You get more than 25 cu.ft. of rear cargo space in the Chevy Trax, while the Crosstrek offers less than 20 cu.ft. of cargo room behind the rear seats—that makes a big difference when you are loading up for the weekend or running errands.

The Chevy Trax also has a number of fantastic standard features, including an 8-inch infotainment display and the Chevy Safety Assist suite, which has six advanced driver assistance technologies. Looking inside the Subaru Crosstrek, its standard infotainment display is just 7 inches in size, which is disappointing, particularly when you consider the difference in price. The 2024 Chevy Trax starts at nearly $5,000 less than the Subaru Crosstrek, making it incredibly accessible and a great pick when shopping on a budget. In fact, you can get the gorgeous styling and advanced features of the highest Trax trim for less than the starting model for the Crosstrek; that is a massive savings and terrific value.

  • Interior

One of the most important things to look at and consider when shopping for a vehicle is how well the interior is designed and arranged. Strangely, this is something we often see people overlook or only consider briefly at the very end of checking out a vehicle, yet most of your time with your SUV will be spent with you inside while driving it. This is one of the major reasons we suggest a test drive for any vehicle you are interested in since there is no better way to feel out the interior than when you are behind the wheel and on the road. Chevy understands the importance of a great interior better than just about anyone else out there, designing fantastic vehicles that are incredibly spacious and comfortable inside.

    The Crosstrek's Limited Cargo Volume

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek is well-designed overall, but we cannot help but feel like there are some oversights and missteps. Much like the Chevy Trax, the Crosstrek is a subcompact SUV, so it is pretty comparable in terms of overall size, and you get room inside for the same number of passengers. Looking at the space the Crosstrek offers for people to stretch out in, it is pretty good, though not necessarily exceptional. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the interior of Subaru's SUV is how little room there is at the rear behind the back seats for you to load up with the things you need to bring with you: less than 20 cu.ft.

The Trax Offers More Space Behind the Rear Seats

By comparison, the 2024 Chevy Trax is beautifully designed and styled to ensure you are completely comfortable and look forward to going for a drive each day. You get similar room inside for your passengers, but overall we prefer how Chevy has arranged the interior of the Trax and the way it surrounds you with rich comfort and elegant style. Even though you get similar amounts of total cargo space inside these two SUVs, the Trax gives you more than 25 cu.ft. of cargo volume in the rear behind the back seats. This is significantly more than you find in the Crosstrek, making it easy for you to have four people along with you and load up the back of your Chevy Trax with camping supplies, coolers for tailgating, or anything else you need.

  • Technology

These days, a great vehicle needs to have so much more than a reliable and sporty engine or a comfortable interior that you look forward to getting in each day. It needs impressive tech features and options that elevate your drive and make it easier for you to get where you are going and complete the needed tasks. Few brands out there recognize this, as well as Chevrolet, with the amazing technology they have been developing in recent years. You can find these terrific tech features throughout the Chevy lineup, and the subcompact Trax beautifully shows off much of what they have to offer.

With the Crosstrek, Great Tech Comes at a Price

Looking inside the Subaru Crosstrek, we can find some good features and options, but much of the best stuff is locked away behind upper trim levels and a higher price. For example, Keyless Access is standard on higher trims but not even available on the starting Base model for the Crosstrek. While Subaru gives the standard Crosstrek a four-speaker sound system, it has a 7-inch infotainment display that is quite undersized, even in a subcompact model. A larger display is available, but you can only get it at a higher trim level that will cut into your budget.

The Trax Gives You More Standard Tech

With the 2024 Chevy Trax, you get terrific features and options to enjoy while also going much easier on your wallet. For starters, an 8-inch infotainment display with support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is standard in the Trax, with a gorgeous 11-inch screen available if you want something bigger. A four-speaker sound system is also standard in the Trax, but you get Remote Keyless Entry with every model here. Best of all, every Trax comes with Chevy Safety Assist, which includes things like a Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, and more. This helps keep you safe, and you can upgrade your tech options while still spending less than someone buying the Crosstrek.

  • Value

No matter how you look at it, buying a car is a sizable investment and a major purchase for most of us. That is why it is so important that you make sure you get the best deal on a vehicle and stick to your budget while shopping. Both the Subaru Crosstrek and Chevy Trax are subcompact SUVs, which makes them entry-level options in their lineups. These kinds of vehicles are great if you are on a tight budget, looking for a vehicle for a new driver, or interested in your first SUV and you do not want to spend too much. That being said, there are significant differences in their prices: the Crosstrek right now starts at $25,195 MSRP and goes up to $32,195 for its highest trim, while the 2024 Chevy Trax starts at just $20,400 MSRP and tops out at $23,900 MSRP for its highest trims.[a]

The Trax's 2RS Offers More for Less

As you can see, that means you save a tremendous amount of money if you choose the Trax rather than the Subaru Crosstrek. You get a terrific vehicle at that price with some superior options to the Crosstrek, like more rear cargo space and a bigger infotainment screen. What's more, you can choose the Trax 2RS model that comes with 19-inch wheels (compared to the standard 17-inch wheels on the Crosstrek), a stunning 11-inch infotainment screen, 8-inch color Driver Information Center, heated seats and steering wheel, and so much more. And the Trax 2RS still starts at a lower price than the standard Base model from Subaru—that is a value that you cannot beat, and it shows how affordable the Trax is.
