  For most people, a great midsize pickup or a light-duty full-size truck like the Chevy Silverado 1500 is the perfect choice. There are some drivers who demand more from their trucks, however, and that is where models like the Silverado HD trucks come into play. If you are looking for a powerful and sophisticated full-size truck, then you have a limited but notable variety of options available for you to choose from, which can make it tricky to pick the right one. Looking at the 2025 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD vs 2025 Ford F-250, for example, we can see that while Ford has a lot to offer and certainly knows how to make a good truck, Chevy has them beat in several very important ways.

  One area in which Ford clearly knows how to compete with other truck companies is their powertrains and the kind of performance they offer. We think Ford has overdone it with the 2025 F-250, however, since there are four different engines available including two V8 gas engines and two versions of their Power Stroke turbo diesel. Chevy keeps things a lot simpler with the Silverado 2500 HD by letting you choose between the standard 6.6L V8 engine or the available Duramax turbo diesel that provides enhanced horsepower and a massive amount of torque to elevate your drive each day. There is no denying that the F-250 is a powerful truck, but Ford could easily cut the number of available engines in half and still be fine.

  Ford offers a bit more towing and payload capacity with the F-250 compared to the Silverado 2500 HD, but Chevy makes better use of their truck's design to give you far more cargo space to utilize. Both of these trucks have two different bed lengths available, but while the F-250 can provide either 65.4 cu.ft. or 78.5 cu.ft. of total cargo volume in its beds, the Silverado 2500 HD delivers 69.5 cu.ft. or 83.5 cu.ft. of cargo room, giving you a lot more space to take advantage of. The tech features you can get in the Silverado 2500 HD are also excellent, with an available 13.4-inch screen that dwarfs the 12-inch screen offered by Ford for the 2025 F-250. • Performance

  

  There is no denying that one of the most important things about any truck you are interested in is the engine and the power it can deliver. This is particularly important with a full-size truck; its large size and weight mean such a vehicle needs an impressive powertrain to ensure it never feels sluggish or unwieldy. Both Chevy and Ford understand how to make a bold and impressive truck with plenty of power under the hood. And while Ford has earned bragging rights for big numbers with the F-250, we think they might have gone overboard this time.

  The F-250's Engine Options

  The 2025 Ford F-250 has four engines available; we have already said it but will say it again: that is more than a heavy-duty truck like this needs. For starters, there is a 6.8L V8 gas engine with 405 hp and 445 lb-ft of torque, which is a great standard engine. But then there is also an available 7.3L V8 gas engine with enhanced performance that we find unnecessary—the increase in power is not that significant. Ford provides two different versions of a 6.7L Power Stroke turbo-diesel V8 engine for the F-250 starting with 475 hp and 1,050 lb-ft of torque. Again, this is completely sufficient, and we see no reason for the High Output version to be offered other than for the sake of having it to brag about.

  Chevy, on the other hand, keeps things a lot simpler while still giving you all you could want from such a truck. The standard powertrain for the 2025 Silverado 2500 HD is a 6.6L V8 gas engine with 401 hp and 464 lb-ft of torque; the fact that it beats the torque of the F-250's standard engine might be why Ford feels the need for a second option. Chevy also offers an available 6.6L Duramax turbo-diesel V8 with 470 hp and 975 lb-ft of torque to provide you with an excellent driving experience. We admit that the diesel engine from Ford puts out bigger numbers, but at this point, you are getting bold performance no matter which one you choose, so we prefer the simplicity of what Chevy delivers.

  One of the key things we look at when it comes to a truck is how capable and functional it is; without those features, you might as well drive a sedan or a compact SUV. A powerful, hard-working truck like the Silverado 2500 HD needs to not only have an impressive engine but also the ability to help you with everything you need. For many of us, that comes down to being able to load up the beds of our trucks with the stuff we have to take with us and hit the road knowing that we left nothing behind.

  F-250 Capacities

  Ford does a pretty good job in this regard, thanks to impressive payload ratings for the 2025 F-250, but they drop the ball when it comes to giving you enough room to take full advantage of it. Maximum payload with the F-250 is 4,246 lbs; like we said, that is definitely impressive. Ford offers two different truck beds: one that is 6.8 feet in length and a longer one that is 8.2 feet in total length. The shorter option offers 65.4 cu.ft. of space while the longer bed has 78.5 cu.ft. of cargo volume to utilize; both of these are good but not great.

  Silverado 2500 HD Capacities

  By comparison, Chevy does not quite reach the same level in terms of payload capacity, but you get a lot more room for the stuff you need to take with you. Maximum payload with the Silverado 2500 HD is 3,689 lbs; that is a very minor difference compared to the F-250 and not one that is likely to impact you in the real world. Chevy gives you a 6.9-ft bed as well as an 8.2-foot bed to choose from, nearly identical in length to the F-250's pair of beds. But with the Silverado 2500 HD, you get 69.5 cu.ft. of cargo volume in the standard bed and 83.5 cu.ft. of total cargo space with the longer bed, giving you much more room for the things you need.
