To help keep the price down and the fuel economy up, the 2020 Spark uses a smaller 1.4 liter Ecotech 4-cylinder engine that produces 98 horsepower and 94 lb-ft of torque. If you're a fan of a manual drive option, the LS manual is not only an extremely affordable vehicle, but it's a blast to drive. Beyond the LS, the manual transmission is available across all trims, which is a rare find these days. Even if you're new to the world of manual transmissions, or have trouble starting on steep inclines, all versions of the Spark feature a hill start assist, which keeps the brakes engaged for a split second as you transition from the brake pedal to the gas pedal. If you instead spring for the automatic transmission, you'll be amazed at just how quiet the continuous variable transmission is and how smooth of a ride it offers.
The LS trim also gives you an excellent 38 miles per gallon on the highway and 29 miles per gallon in the city with a manual. The automatic transmission bumps the city mpg up to 30, and all trims feature a 9-gallon tank.
