While a full-size truck like the Chevy Silverado is a terrific option if you need to be able to handle a tremendous amount of work, for many people, a midsize pickup is a better choice. The 2022 Chevy Colorado Z71 is a fantastic midsize truck that delivers impressive power and performance for its size while giving you maneuverability that lets you take it anywhere. Every Colorado model can really shine for the right owner, but the Z71 trim is something special with terrific standard features and some of the most remarkable available options we have ever seen, letting you put together the perfect pickup with everything you need.

The Z71 trim is available for all three configurations of the Chevy Colorado, which gives you the freedom to get the right combination of cab size and bed length, as well as with either two-wheel drive or four-wheel drive. This is, in many ways, the pinnacle trim for the Colorado, and it has amazing features, both standard and available. For example, while a 2.5L 4-cylinder engine is standard on some Colorado models, the Z71 comes with an impressive 3.6L V6 engine for boosted performance. The Colorado Z71 also has a 2.8L Duramax engine available if you prefer a diesel. And when properly equipped, you can get up to 7,700 lbs of towing while enjoying everything the Z71 has to offer.

Although a lot of people focus on the Colorado ZR2 trim for going off-road––with good reason, it is fantastic––the Z71 is also a great option for hitting the trail. It comes with the Z71 Off-Road Suspension package standard, which is excellent, and this year has added a new Trail Boss package available for the Z71 that includes a 1-inch suspension leveling kit and skid plates to protect the underside of your truck. Inside the Colorado Z71, you will find impressive luxury and technology thanks to an 8-inch infotainment display, heated front seats, and much more.

    V6 and Diesel Engines

While there are three engines available for the Chevy Colorado, the Z71 trim has just two on offer since it starts with the more-powerful V6 gas engine rather than the standard four-cylinder option. This means the 2022 Colorado Z71 comes standard with an impressive 3.6L V6 engine that delivers 308 hp and 275 lb-ft of torque and is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. By comparison, the standard 4-cylinder engine found on some other Colorado models delivers 200 hp and comes with a 6-speed automatic instead. If you prefer a diesel option, then you can get a 2.8L Turbo-Diesel for the Colorado Z71 that provides 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque.

One of the best things about choosing the Chevy Colorado is that its midsize design means you get to enjoy impressive power while still keeping your gas costs low. With its standard V6 engine and two-wheel drive, the Colorado Z71 gets an estimated 18 MPG in the city and 25 MPG on the highway. If you go with the available diesel engine, then you can get an estimated 19 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway, making it a fantastic option if you need a truck for getting between Albany and Schenectady, Saratoga Springs, or anywhere else that involves a lot of highway driving each day.

    Work-Ready

Of course, despite this being a midsize model, the Colorado Z71 is still a fantastic option for getting a lot of work done. This trim is offered with a Long Box for both the Extended Cab and Crew Cab, giving you more than 70 in of bed length and more than 1,500 lbs of payload capacity to take advantage of. With the standard V6 engine, the Z71 can handle up to 7,000 lbs of towing capacity, while the available diesel engine allows for up to 7,700 lbs of maximum towing. No matter which engine or configuration you choose, you are going to get a fantastic truck to help you do your job.

  • Off-Road Functionality

    Built to Explore

There is no denying that the Colorado ZR2 is one of the most impressive off-road trims available anywhere, but the Colorado Z71 can provide you with fantastic off-road functionality that you might not expect, given how much attention the ZR2 gets. For the 2022 model year, in fact, the Z71 is better than ever for hitting the trail, thanks to the available Trail Boss package. Even if you simply go with the standard Z71, you still get great off-road features, including an automatic locking rear differential, hill descent control to assist you on rough roads with lots of up-and-down, and 17-inch wheels with all-terrain tires.

What helps really make the Z71 a fantastic off-road pickup, however, is the standard Z71 Off-Road Suspension package that comes on every model. This goes above and beyond the impressive suspension of the basic Colorado and allows the Z71 to tackle rough trails and paths that would prove too much for the base trims. You also get a transfer case shield on four-wheel drive Colorado Z71 models to help protect the drivetrain underneath the vehicle on rough trails or when going over rocks. All of this comes together to make the Z71 a surprisingly capable off-road machine, particularly thanks to the impressive power of its standard engine.

    The Trail Boss

To take your Colorado Z71 off-road performance to the next level, however, you should check out the Trail Boss package that is newly available on 2022 models. With the Trail Boss package, you get a dealer-installed 1-inch suspension-leveling kit, as well as front and mid-vehicle skid plates to help further protect the underside of your truck. You also get some aesthetic touches with this package, including black emblems and red tow hooks, plus the front air dam is eliminated on Trail Boss Z71 models to help improve front ground clearance. Altogether, the ZR2 trim might be the ultimate off-road Colorado, but the Z71 is a worthy companion that can help you conquer a wide range of trails.

  • Luxury and Technology

    A 21st Century Truck

Trucks of old were rough and barebones pieces of machinery with uncomfortable seating, little in the way of advanced technology, and air conditioning meant cranking down the windows. These days, however, pickups have come a long way, and the 2022 Colorado Z71 is one of the most impressive and advanced trucks on the road. Features like automatic climate control are standard on the Z71, and you get a 6-way power-adjustable driver seat. Perhaps most impressively, heated front seats are standard on the Z71.

You get an 8-inch infotainment display screen on the Colorado Z71, with Navigation functionality available, along with HD Radio and a standard 6-speaker sound system. If you want rich, deep audio quality in your truck, then there is an available 7-speaker Bose premium sound system that is truly stunning and takes your driving experience to the next level. You also get numerous USB ports for connectivity, a Wi-Fi hotspot, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and numerous In-Vehicle Apps, all standard. The Colorado Z71 features a multi-color driver information system display, plus remote keyless entry and vehicle start, while additional features like a wireless charging pad are available.

    Safety Technologies

The 2022 Colorado Z71 also comes with a number of advanced safety technologies and features, both standard and available. You get a comprehensive airbag suite inside the Chevy Colorado, along with a rear vision camera––the Z71 comes with an HD rear vision camera for improved clarity and picture quality. The Z71 also comes with a Rear Park Assist system that alerts you to nearby objects while backing up at low speeds. An available Safety Package takes these systems even further by adding a Forward Collision Alert to warn you when a possible collision is detected and Lane Departure Warning to alert you when you might be drifting from your lane.
