Sitting on the northern border of California and Nevada is a big, beautiful lake called Tahoe. This body of freshwater serves as a scene for camping, fishing, and other water sports, nestled in the Sierra Nevada Mountains surrounded by pine forests, pristine beaches, and challenging ski trails. When Chevrolet chose to make a full-size, three-row SUV that would be rugged enough for the great outdoors and stylish enough for the fanciest resorts, it was only natural that the automotive giant chose to name this vehicle after this wondrous lake. The 2022 Chevy Tahoe represents the newest and most advanced version of this large, luxury SUV.

Tahoe first hit the roads back in 1992, and for its 30th anniversary, this model continues into its fifth generation, providing drivers with an exceptional combination of luxury and performance. Chevrolet gives drivers a number of excellent options and choices on the 2022 Tahoe that will allow them to make this truck their own. In addition to 6 different trims that range from the base LS model to the top Premier and High Country trims, drivers can also choose between three different engines and rear-wheel or four-wheel drive. If Tahoe drivers are really interested in adventure, they can choose the Z71 model that comes four-wheel drive standard with plenty of other features like red recovery hooks and steel skid plates that make this model at home off the road as well as on it.

Three Engines: Three Levels of Power

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe gives you a choice of three excellent engines. All models except the High Country come equipped with a 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 gas engine. This engine has variable valve timing on its cast aluminum cylinders, utilizing direct high-pressure fuel injection with dynamic fuel management and stop/start technology to reduce emissions and improve overall fuel efficiency. As a result, this 5.3-liter V8 can produce up to 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque.

Chevy also offers the Tahoe with an available 6.2-liter EcoTec3 V8 gas engine that comes standard on the High Country trim. This is an extremely powerful engine capable of producing 420 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Just like the 5.3-liter engine, this is 6.2-liter V8 features variable valve timing and direct high-pressure fuel injection with dynamic fuel management and stop/start technology.

The other engine option is a 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel I-6. This has its cast aluminum cylinders in a dual overhead camshafts configuration and has high-pressure, common-rail direct fuel injection to provide 277 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. Just like the other two available engines on the 2022 Chevy Tahoe, the Duramax Turbo Diesel features a cast aluminum engine block.

Each of the three engine options on the 2022 Chevy Tahoe comes paired with a Hydra-Matic 10L80 10-speed automatic transmission. The extra gear speeds on this transmission improve efficient performance while giving you greater control over the Tahoe.

    How This SUV Handles

Speaking of control, the Tahoe features electric power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering. This will help you with cornering, which can often be a problem for many drivers trying to handle a full-size SUV. The 2022 Tahoe rides on a choice of 18-inch, 20-inch, and 22-inch cast aluminum wheels. The models with the smaller wheels will give you a tighter turning diameter of 38.1-feet, while the two larger wheels have a 39.7-foot turning diameter. This will give the models with the smaller wheels a slight advantage when it comes to cornering, while the larger wheels will provide a smoother ride and better overall acceleration. As it is, the Tahoe has solid acceleration, even with the base 5.3-liter V8, which can go 0 to 60 miles per hour in just 7.5 seconds with a top speed of 115 miles per hour.

The front suspension on the 2022 Tahoe is an independent coil-over-shocks design with a stabilizer bar. The rear suspension is independent multi-link, also with a coil-over-springs design with a stabilizer bar. This will give you a very comfortable ride, with well-cushioned bumps and rolls. Chevy offers an optional four-corner air control with magnetic ride control, which comes standard on the High Country model. This will give incomparable shock absorption, no matter the terrain. Chevy offers the 2022 Tahoe with a choice of rear-wheel drive for improved fuel economy and acceleration or four-wheel drive for better road grip and traction. The Tahoe Z71 is four-wheel drive standard.

How Fuel Efficient Is This SUV?

Unlike so many other full-size SUVs, the 2022 Chevy Tahoe won’t hurt you too much at the gas pump. When it comes to fuel economy, nothing can match the Tahoe with the available 3.0-liter Duramax Turbo Diesel. This engine with rear-wheel drive will give you an estimated 21 miles per gallon in the city, 28 miles per gallon on the highway, and 24 miles per gallon combined. Opting for the available four-wheel drivetrain will reduce fuel economy slightly to 20 miles per gallon in city driving, 26 miles per gallon on the highway, and a combined 22 miles per gallon.

The fuel economy for the two gas engines on the Tahoe is quite impressive as well. The base 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 gives you 15 miles per gallon in the city, 20 miles per gallon on the highway, and 17 miles per gallon combined when paired with a rear-wheel drivetrain. The available 6.2-liter V8 has slightly lower fuel efficiency numbers, an estimated 14 miles per gallon in city driving, 20 miles per gallon on the highway, and a combined 16 miles per gallon. Interestingly enough, if you choose a Tahoe with four-wheel drive and either of these two gas engines, you should expect the same fuel economy numbers, 14 miles per gallon in the city, 19 miles per gallon on the highway, and 16 miles per gallon combined. Still, these are solid numbers for a full-size, three-row SUV.

    Towing What You Need

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe offers drivers the ability to tow heavy trailers, which is usually something reserved for full-size and heavy-duty trucks. This means that you can drive a luxury full-size SUV with the capability of a pickup truck! The Tahoe with the standard 5.3-liter V8 can actually tow up to 8,400 pounds. This figure drops slightly to 8,300 pounds if you choose the optional 6.2-liter V8 and 8,200 pounds with the available Duramax Turbo-Diesel. This is the kind of capability that you won’t find in most other luxury SUVs.

    Pack Up Everything You Need

Chevy has made sure to give the 2022 Tahoe plenty of room to carry all of your stuff no matter where you go. The trunk holds 25.5 cubic feet of cargo, with the ability to carry over 2,000 pounds of total payload. These are the kind of numbers usually provided only by full-size pickup trucks. If you need more room, simply fold down the third row of seats to free up a total of 72.6 cubic feet. This is a number that most other three-row SUVs top out at. However, the 2022 Tahoe easily surpasses this number, especially when you flip down the second row of seats as well. This will give you an impressive 122.9 cubic feet of cargo space, easily converting your Tahoe from a passenger vehicle to a cargo vehicle.

Bring Along All of Your Friends

The 2022 Tahoe features three rows of seats. However, unlike most other three-row SUVs, the Tahoe has the space to actually fit up to 8 adults in its three rows comfortably. The High Country and Premier can fit up to 7 passengers since the second row features individual bucket seats instead of a bench.

This extra passenger space on the Tahoe is crucial if you are planning to use your 2022 Tahoe for long road trips. Let’s face it, on most other three-row SUVs, you are going to hear it from the folks sitting in the third row about not having enough legroom, headroom, and shoulder room. This is not the case with the Tahoe, which features over 178 cubic feet of passenger space for you and your friends and family to stretch out, even on the longest drives. The third row of the Tahoe features over 38 inches of headroom, almost 35 inches of legroom, and over 62 inches of shoulder room. While the first and second rows of seats offer more headroom, legroom, and shoulder room than the third row, the difference is so slight as to be practically unnoticeable. With the 2022 Chevy Tahoe, you won’t have to worry about being serenaded by choruses of, “Are we there yet?” coming from the third row of seats.

  • Technology

Technology Is a Key Part of Any Road Trip

The 2022 Chevy Tahoe may be the most technologically advanced SUV ever built by Chevrolet. It starts with a Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium System with a 10.2-inch diagonal multicolor reconfigurable infotainment screen that comes standard on all Tahoe models except the LS. This system features Google built-in interfaces, including Google Assistant, Google Maps, and Google Play. The Google Assistant will give you the ability to search Google via voice-over commands, so you can you’re your eyes on the road and your hands on the wheel while you access Google. Meanwhile, Google Maps will help you find wherever you need to go, with real-time updates so you can avoid traffic snarls along the way.

The Chevrolet Infotainment 3 Premium System also will help you and your passengers stay connected, with Bluetooth streaming for music and calls. There is also wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, so you can dispense with those annoying smartphone cables and access your favorite apps directly into the system.

If you are a true audiophile, then you are going to want to get behind the wheel of a 2022 Chevy Tahoe. The LT, RST, and Z71 models feature a standard 9-speaker Bose audio system that will turn your Tahoe into a self-propelled concert hall. For the ultimate in audio, then you should consider the Tahoe High Country and Premier. These two models are equipped with a 10-speaker Bose surround audio system with CenterPoint. This will put you in the center of a sound system that has the great sound that audiophiles the world over associate with Bose, one of the leaders in sound engineering and high-quality audio systems.

With all this technology right at your fingertips, you and your passengers will probably never want to get out of your Tahoe when you arrive at your destination. But then, isn’t it always true that getting there can be half the fun? So, why not make getting there all the fun in a 2022 Chevy Tahoe?
