3 Ways to Prepare Your Car for a Road Trip

With summer already here, I’m sure you have at least one road trip planned. Some people take multiple road trips instead of one long vacation. It’s a great way to save money and see a lot of different places.
In all the excitement that surrounds the road trip, it’s easy to forget that there would be no road trip without a reliable car. Making sure you have a vehicle that is going to be dependable is your responsibility. Here are some definitive ways of checking your cars readiness before heading out. Below are some quick ways to ensure you have a fun and memorable road trip.
1. Before you begin your trip make a list of things to check:
Tires, oil, transmission fluid, windshield washer fluid, windshield wipers, battery, headlights, directionals, brakes
If you notice you are low on any of these fluids, top them off with the proper amount. Make sure your tires have enough tread to handle extreme driving conditions (extreme heat, rain, hail). The same goes with for windshield wipers. All your lights should be fully illuminated and all directionals working.
It’s also a good idea to get your car inspected by an auto body repair shop if you’re vehicle has been involved in an accident recently. You always want to be confident that your vehicle is structurally sound before taking any long trips. Even minor accidents can comprise the safety of your vehicle.
2. Before embarking on your trip, is there more than one of you who is able to drive?
If not, grab an extra person or swap someone out. Should you be driving into the night or after exerting a lot of energy, it is very easy to become fatigued and fall asleep at the wheel. Make plans with another driver to switch driving so one person isn’t doing all of it. Or, plan ahead and stay overnight in a hotel or rest in a very well lit area. Do not take chances with fatigue and night driving.
3. There are always certain necessities to have while on a road trip.
Sure the right playlist is absolutely important, but so are some others. Number one on this list is Emergency Kit. It should be in every persons glove box or trunk space. At the risk of sounding like every parent out there: you just never know and it’s always better to be prepared.
Bring plenty of water. Should you find yourself on a very long highway with no gas station or rest stop around to buy any, make sure you have plenty of your own. Water always comes in handy in many more ways than one.
Navigation. It doesn’t have to be an on board GPS, as long as your cell phone has one, it is nice to know that sometimes we have to admit that technology really can save the day.
Lastly, always bring a little extra patience. You are not the only person with the idea to go on a road trip this summer. Highways, freeways, parking lots, rest stops and beaches will all be packed with plenty other people. The best way to avoid an accident, hurt ego or embarrassment is to practice patience.
