It is no secret that among the most important features looked for when buying a car are the ones that keep you and your passengers safe. Seatbelts are no longer enough, as distracted driving has regrettably become the norm instead of the exception. Chevrolet, in particular, has outfitted an outstanding suite of safety features to the 2022 Chevy Equinox. We’re singling out the Equinox today because it not only represents the type of car many small families, who are the most concerned about safety, would buy, but it is also one of Chevrolet’s most popular models. So, if you’re considering a visit to a Chevy Equinox dealer near you, here is the full safety rundown.

Chevrolet has really done an outstanding job in offering what are now considered basic safety amenities across the brand. Nearly all recent Chevy models are all outfitted with the same safety tech, keeping you protected on the road. Today we’ll be looking at the Chevy safety suite called Chevy Safety Assist. We’ll go over the basics of the package, as well as dive a little deeper into certain features we find particularly useful and those features that are there for you should the technology ever fail.

Chevy Safety Assist

Chevy Safety Assist is Chevrolet’s Safety and Driver Assist package that is available on the base trim level of nearly every model sold by the auto giant. This details its commitment not only to safety but to affordability. You should never have to exceed your means in order to have your vehicle come with essential modern safety features.

The basic package on the 2022 Equinox, before any additional features are thrown in on higher trim levels, offers your standard set of modern tech. This includes:

  • Following Distance Indicator
  • Forward Collision Alert
  • Automatic Emergency Braking
  • Front Pedestrian Braking
  • Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Warning
  • IntelliBeam Auto High Beam Assist

Let’s break these down to explain their function.

  • Automatic Emergency Braking: these are the brakes that respond faster than you could. Utilized by the Equinox when an emergency is detected, like when the driver ahead of you stops suddenly, the system automatically applies the brakes and stops the car before the accident can occur.
  • Front Pedestrian Braking: cameras and sensors hidden in the front of the Equinox are scanning for the inevitable jaywalker or kiddo chasing after a ball in the street. Like Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking will sense the person ahead of you and apply the brakes so you won’t hit said person.
  • Lane Keeping Assist with Lane Departure Warning: this system scans the lanes of the road and alerts you if you begin to unintentionally cross the traffic line. It will then attempt to provide gentle steering corrections to keep you safely in your lane.
  • Forward Collision Alert: utilized in tandem with the automatic emergency braking and forward pedestrian braking systems, Forward Collision Alert will sound if the Equinox senses that a frontal crash is imminent, thus alerting you and the automatic system to hit the brakes.
  • IntelliBeam: these are intelligent automatic high beams that will automatically activate and deactivate depending on the traffic ahead of you. No more accidentally blinding oncoming drivers.
  • Following Distance Indicator: this sensor tells you how close you are to another vehicle. The gap time is indicated in seconds to alert you to the potential hazard that could be caused by following another vehicle too closely.

The 2022 Equinox also comes standard with a rearview camera that shows you the area directly behind you when your Equinox is in reverse. Selectable dynamic guidelines are placed over the image to help maneuver your vehicle’s path. This camera is mostly used for backing out of or into the driveway or a parking space. The upper trim levels offer an upgrade to HD Surround Vision, which provides a complete camera view around your SUV.

Upper Trim Add-Ons

So the 2022 Equinox is outfitted with what Chevy considers the basic essentials of modern safety technology. Chevy Safety Assist is available on all four trim levels of the Equinox. But while Chevrolet is committed to offering safety features on the lowest trim level, there are some added features outfitted to the upper trims. For instance, the RS and Premier are outfitted with standard Lane Change Alert with Blind Zone Alert. This feature provides a side mirror alert in the form of a light built into the mirror to warn when a vehicle is in your blind spot. The RS and Premier are also available with Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which warns you of approaching cross traffic when your Equinox is in reverse. This comes in handy in parking lots especially. The final upper trim feature is the Safety Alert Seat, which vibrates or beeps to help alert you to the side on which a potential collision could occur.

Teen Driver

One feature we find particularly appealing about the Equinox, especially for families with youngsters about to get behind the wheel, is something called Teen Driver. Teen Driver is a feature specifically geared towards optimizing vehicle safety for young drivers. Monitored by parents via an app, Teen Driver can offer a report card to the parents on their teens’ driving habits, limit the top speed, adjust the volume controls on the audio system, and disengage certain infotainment features to help prevent distraction. Teen Driver also automatically turns on any safety feature you, as the parent, feel would be needed to help protect your teen and others around them.

The Unsung Safety Heroes

Finally, we want to take a look at the more passive safety features. The ones that don’t exactly alert you to their presence but are still there tirelessly working to ensure your safety. The chief workers here are the airbags and seatbelts. Every 2022 Equinox is outfitted with frontal, side, side curtain, and head curtain airbags. Every seat gets a three-point seatbelt, and there is a LATCH child safety tether system for car seats. Rear child safety locks are also included in every trim level.

Other unsung heroes of safety include the tire pressure monitoring system, which pops up any time the system senses your tires may be losing pressure. Sure, the air pressure outside could affect your tire pressure, but you’ll still want to check for punctures, as having a blowout at high speeds could spell disaster. Theft-deterrent alarm systems are outfitted to each Equinox, as is a 3-month trial period to OnStar, Chevy’s connected security service that can alert law enforcement, EMS, or roadside assistance should you find yourself in an accident or otherwise in need of help.

Engineering Safety

Well, that’s the round-up of all the safety features you’ll find on the 2022 Chevy Equinox. These features aren’t limited to just the Equinox but are found across the Chevrolet lineup. As we said earlier, the Equinox is one of the most popular Chevy models and the type of car that smaller families and modern drivers are eager to buy. All of these features can be shown to you by the professionals at our dealership, so do stop by if we’ve piqued your curiosity enough to take a look at the 2022 Chevy Equinox.
