Chevy’s Certified Pre-Owned Benefits Program Unpacked

Buying a used car comes with its own set of insecurities. Chevrolet’s Certified Pre-Owned Vehicle (CPO) program eliminates the risk by providing a manufacturer certification for pre-owned Chevys that meet the high standards and requirements to match the quality of cars that are fresh off the factory belt.

Purchasing a certified pre-owned Chevy, Buick or GMC gets buyers a built-in value of $2,800. Built-in value means that a CPO vehicle comes with additional services, regardless of the listing price, that adds up to a national average value of $2,800 as compared with a non-certified vehicle. This value represents services available through the benefits program. These benefits are intended to give buyers the assurance they need, when purchasing a used vehicle, that it will last them many more years to come.

Manufacturer Certified

All General Motors (GM) products qualify for the GM Certified used vehicle program. Potential buyers can purchase a GM vehicle through a private seller or a dealership, but with a Chevrolet, Buick or GMC dealership, buyers can have confidence that they are purchasing a manufacturer certified vehicle. That’s why buyers should purchase their CPO vehicle directly from a participating General Motors or official Chevrolet dealership.

To qualify for the certification program, a used vehicle must be within the most recent five model years and under 75,000 miles. This is to ensure that buyers receive the best possible lifespan and quality out of their used vehicle. All vehicles go through a 172-point inspection and reconditioning process before being put back on the market. Any issues that are found are fixed and parts replaced before buyers leave the dealership with their new car. In addition, safety recall repairs or replacements are completed before the CPO vehicle is listed for sale.

Warranties

Part of the Built-In Value for CPO vehicles includes two factory-backed limited warranties. Warranties are transferable to subsequent owners, which makes it convenient for clients. A CPO Chevy comes with a 6-Year or 100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty, and a 12-Month or 12,000-Mile Bumper-to-Bumper Limited Warranty, both with $0 deductible. These warranties are limited by which value occurs first: by age or by mileage. The 6-Year/100,000-mile Powertrain Limited Warranty also includes 24-Hour Roadside Assistance provided by Allstate and Courtesy Transportation. Courtesy Transportation is only provided if warranty repairs are needed. Otherwise, Chevrolet will either provide alternate transportation or reimburse owners for transportation expenses.

It’s important to note that these warranties have a start date from the time the vehicle was purchased brand-new. Chevy recommends potential buyers check the dates of purchase before committing to a binding contract.

Luxury 3-day Exchange Program

Dream not come true? If buyers don’t like their CPO vehicle after bringing it home, Chevy offers a 3-day exchange program where owners can bring back their vehicle in a 72-hour time-frame or before adding 150 miles to the car. Chevy will then exchange the vehicle for a different one of your choice. This means that a buyer could take home a Camaro, realize it wasn’t the right fit, exchange it, and leave with a Tahoe. The 3-day exchange policy is not restricted to an exchange of the same model.

Know What You’re Getting

All CPO vehicles come with a free Vehicle History Report from CARFAX. Potential buyers can feel comfortable having access to any past problems the vehicle may have had including service history, wrecks, title issues, and damages. Or, in most cases, relieved to know their CPO vehicle has a clean slate.

Maintenance

CPO vehicles are part of the Scheduled Maintenance Program. Each vehicle comes with two maintenance visits. Both visits must occur before two years have passed from delivery of the vehicle or before 24,000 miles are added to the current mileage. Services include oil and oil filter changes, tire rotations, and multi-point inspections. Air filter replacement is excluded.

Chevy Gives Buyers Three Months

Certified Pre-Owned Chevy vehicles come with a 3-month trial subscription to OnStar and SiriusXM Satellite Radio. Only vehicles installed with OnStar hardware are eligible for the free trial. OnStar provides automatic help in a crash, Roadside Assistance, monthly diagnostic checks and Turn-by-Turn Navigation. OnStar is available in most GM models year 2015 or newer.

The SiriusXM All Access package gives buyers the option to listen anywhere on any device. Never be without the music you enjoy whether you’re on your computer, on your phone, or in the car. SiriusXM includes over 150 channels and sports programming from the NFL to NASCAR.

Exclusive Offers

Purchasing a CPO vehicle comes with access to exclusive offers. This year, Chevy is offering 1.9% APR (annual percentage rate) financing on certain Chevrolet, Buick, and GMC Certified Pre-Owned cars, crossovers, SUVs, and trucks.  Only buyers that qualify are eligible for this special financing rate; ask your local participating dealership if you may qualify. Offer has a limited timeframe; vehicle delivery must occur before or by April 2, 2018.

Buyer Recommendations

Always inspect a vehicle in person before purchasing it used. No program is perfect, and though General Motors strives for excellence—we encourage buyers to do their own research and hold us to high standards when appropriate.

The exterior and interior of the car should receive a full inspection, and a test drive is paramount for early detection of functional issues, or just plain incompatibility between driver and vehicle. Buyers are also encouraged to be familiar with the recall information on the make and model of the CPO vehicle they are interested in and to verify that all recalls were taken care of before certification.

Be familiar with the warranty on a CPO vehicle and cautious of the length of the warranty. Most transferable warranties begin the day the car was first serviced and not the date of CPO buyer purchase, which is a common misperception.
