The auto industry can be a fickle creature—you might not expect to see that from a car dealership, but we’re a part of this industry, so we know it better than just about anyone else. It’s easy for car companies, critics and reviewers, dealerships, and even drivers to become fixated on flashy and over-the-top sports cars, supercars, and futuristic trucks. Those things are fun to look at, of course, but for many of us, they’re not realistic options and are not something we’ll have sitting in our driveway or garage any time soon. Instead, something like a compact SUV is a more important vehicle because it’s exactly the sort of thing we’ll count on for our daily routine.

For example, looking at the 2024 Chevy Equinox LS might initially not be as exciting as the Chevy Corvette and its mid-engine design. And yet, as the starting trim level for Chevy’s popular compact SUV, the Equinox LS is one of the most important vehicles out there. This is the sort of SUV that many of us rely on to get us to work each day, pick up our kids from school, run errands in the evening, or go out and enjoy ourselves on the weekend. We think it’s time this workhorse of an SUV gets some attention as we recognize the beautiful style, reliable performance, and great features it brings to the road.

Performance You Can Count On

It’s easy to overlook the importance of good performance from a compact SUV like the Equinox, but fortunately, that’s not something Chevy has done. The Equinox comes with a standard 1.5L Turbo engine that delivers 175 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque; that torque, in particular, is something we love to see in a vehicle like this. It means the Equinox feels good to drive with responsive acceleration and the ability to push uphill without feeling like your SUV is fighting for its life. It also gives the Equinox LS up to 1,500 lbs of towing capacity when properly equipped with an available hitch ball, which is perfect for pulling a small trailer or camper behind your SUV. This engine is paired with a six-speed automatic for a responsive drive; while front-wheel drive is standard, you can get all-wheel drive for improved traction.

Stylish and Functional Good Looks

When you hit the road, you deserve to have a vehicle that you look forward to driving, which starts from the moment you set eyes on it before getting in. We love that the Equinox looks good, even with its starting features and the LS trim level, including 17-inch wheels that are bold and attractive. LED headlamps are standard, with automatic on/off functionality, and you get IntelliBeam automatic high beams that switch on and off based on lighting and surrounding traffic conditions.

Heated, power-adjustable side mirrors are standard on the LS, which makes it easy to keep them clear of snow, ice, and frost; plus, you can adjust both side mirrors with the push of a button. The body-color door handles include keyless open at all four doors, while the rear liftgate is easy to open and close so you can load up and hit the road with ease.

A Spacious and Comfortable Interior

Inside the 2024 Equinox LS, you’ll find an interior that Chevy has put together in a way that’s immediately inviting, with excellent features that never go overboard. Premium cloth seating is standard with front bucket seats that are comfortable whether you’re making a quick trip to the store or hitting the road to go cross country. You get four-way adjustable front seats, carpeted floor mats, and climate controls with an air cabin filter to keep dust and pollen outside your vehicle.

Best of all, you also get plenty of space inside the Equinox LS: 40 inches of headroom and nearly 41 inches of legroom up front, with almost 39 inches of headroom and nearly 40 inches of legroom for folks in the back. Combine that with almost 30 cu.ft. of rear cargo space and nearly 64 cu.ft. of total cargo volume inside, and you have plenty of room for the people and things you want to bring along with you.

Innovative Tech Features

Technology is the name of the game in the auto industry these days, and the Chevy Equinox LS is far from being barebones, even though it is the starting trim. You’ll find a 7-inch infotainment display up front in the Equinox LS, which is plenty large for a compact SUV like this, with support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus a six-speaker sound system.

A 3.5-inch display is found in the Driver Information Center to provide you with additional information while driving, plus you get keyless open and start, standard cruise control, and more, all included. If you’re looking for more tech features, the available LS Convenience package adds things like an eight-way power driver’s seat, a 4.2-inch Driver Information Center display, and more.

Advanced Safety Tech

Nothing is more important than how well a vehicle can help keep you and your loved ones safe on the road—fortunately, Chevrolet understands this. The 2024 Equinox LS comes with Chevy Safety Assist standard on every model, providing you with a terrific suite of advanced safety features. This includes a Forward Collision Alert with Automatic Emergency Braking, Front Pedestrian Braking, and a Following Distance Indicator to warn you when you’re too close to the vehicle ahead of you. You also get a Lane Keep Assist system with a Lane Departure Warning to alert you if you seem to be drifting from your lane, helping you to stay safer on the road. All of this comes together beautifully to help protect you on the road, particularly when combined with safe, careful driving practices.

Embrace Your Dark Side: The Midnight Edition

While we love the standard features of the Equinox LS, we also know that it’s nice to have some available features and options that elevate your vehicle to the next level. One of our favorite things about the Equinox LS is the available Midnight Edition, which transforms this compact SUV into a dark, intimidating presence on the road. With the Midnight Edition, the Equinox LS gets 18-inch Gloss Black wheels for a bolder stance and overall look, plus front and rear Black bowtie emblems, body-color mirror caps on the outside mirrors, and a unique Black grille that looks absolutely stunning. Like a shadow in the night, the Midnight Edition prowls the road and ensures you have a fantastic drive every time you get behind the wheel.

The Chevy Equinox LS Gets It Done

As you can see, the Chevy Equinox LS is much more than a starting option for this gorgeous compact SUV; it’s a powerful and sophisticated vehicle in its own right. We all know that available options and enhanced trim levels can add a lot to a vehicle, but the standard features should never feel underwhelming or like they’re an afterthought. With the Equinox LS, it’s clear that Chevy wants to meet the needs of a wide range of drivers and deliver a starting model that is fun to drive, looks stunning, and has plenty of great things packed into it.

The fact that you also have a wide range of available options, including the exclusive Midnight Edition, demonstrates the fact that Chevy wants to give every driver a great time on the road.
