Four-wheel drive and All-Wheel Drive can give you a helping hand in challenging road conditions. You aren’t alone if you wonder how that works and what it means. Simply put, All-Wheel Drive powertrains provide power to all wheels, generally full-time, but some vehicles can offer it on demand. Four-wheel drive vehicles have two axles that can provide torque to all four wheels at the same time.

While either choice can help you in challenging situations, we’ll discuss the pros and cons of each. First, let’s look at some models that have AWD or 4WD, which might give you a better picture of what each option works better at doing.

In 2024, Chevy will have ten vehicles in their lineup that offer all- or four-wheel drive. For drivers looking for a Chevy Blazer EV for sale, you will be happy to see that the all-electric SUV is on the list. While all the models are excellent vehicles, we’ve narrowed it down to the seven with the best features and pricing combinations, with an eye towards variety and durability for activities that benefit the most from AWD/4WD.

Blazer: A Tradition Of Excellence

The Blazer has been one of the most well-known SUVs since its inception in 1969. Now part of the midsized SUV class, it makes an excellent choice for a family or commuter vehicle. It has seating for up to five passengers and a generous 64.2 cu.ft. of cargo volume. An EPA-estimated 19 MPG in the city and 26 MPG on the highway make it a great SUV for road trips and carpooling.

The Chevy Blazer has four available trims: 2LT (MSRP $35,400), 3LT (MSRP $39,300), RS (MSRP $42,800), and Premier (MRSP $42,800).[a]

Nine exterior colors and two special edition packages are available for the 2LT and 3LT trims. The Blazer offers wireless charging, remote start, and adaptive cruise control. The 10.2-inch HD color center touch-screen lets you enjoy in-vehicle apps that provide various entertainment and information options. An available Wi-Fi Hotspot can connect up to seven devices with high-speed access.

All-wheel drive is available in the 2LT, 3LT, RS, and Premier trims.

Blazer EV: Electrifying & Exciting

Electric Vehicles have dramatically risen in popularity thanks to their environmentally friendly technology, longer battery lives, and more charging stations popping up across the country. The Blazer EV is an excellent example of how an electric vehicle can be stylish, savvy, and fun to drive.

With battery ranges of 279 miles (LT), 279 miles AWD or 324 miles RWD (RS), and 294 miles (SS), the Blazer EV can make commutes and daily drives better for the planet and kinder to your wallet. There’s a lot of get up and go in this sporty SUV, with the SS trim clocking in at a GM-estimated 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds and with 557 hp under the hood.

The Chevy Blazer EV has three available trims: LT (MSRP $56,715), RS (MSRP $60,215), and SS (MSRP to be announced closer to the trim’s launch in Spring 2024).[a] Eight exterior paint colors are available, each topped with an eye-catching black roof for contrast.

The interior is comfortable for five people, with stylish Adrenaline Red or Black/Medium Gray color choices with Argon Orange accents. While the offerings from its gas-powered predecessor are mostly the same, the EV has a massive center touchscreen upgrade to 17.7 in.

All-wheel drive is available on the LT and RS trims.

Colorado: The Off-Roading Beast

Created as the smaller version of the Silverado, the Chevy Colorado has become a notable truck in its own right. While it can tow up to 7,700 lbs and do an excellent job of it, the soul of the Colorado belongs to off-roading. With five available driving modes to face any terrain the great outdoors throws at it, a best-in-class 12.2-inch ground clearance, and five boron steel skid plates for the best-in-class underbody protection, this truck is a warrior that thrives in mud and rocks.

There are five trims to choose from: WT (MSRP $29,200), LT (MSRP $31,600), Trail Boss (MSRP $37,000), Z71 (MSRP $39,900), and ZR2 (MSRP $46,800), with one special package for the ZR2 trim.[a] There are eight exterior color options, all of which beautifully highlight the rugged body of this midsized truck.

The 11-inch fully digital driver information center has built-in Google and an available trailering app that will help keep your load towing smoothly. The center console has an 11.3-inch screen to access various infotainment options, and a wireless charging pad is available for the cabin.

Four-wheel drive is available on the WT, LT, Trail Boss, Z71 and ZR2 trims.

The Silverado has become Chevy’s landmark pickup, earning a spot in the hearts of drivers who love its hardworking capabilities and weekend warriors who love its versatility. With the ability to tow up to 13,300 lbs and the max payload set at 2,260 lbs, you’ve got the power to get the job done. The pickup bed has 12 tie-downs and 89.1 cu.ft. of standard cargo volume. The multifunction tailgate offers six ways to load, unload, access the bed, and keep everything in place.

The Silverado comes in an impressive 11 different exterior colors and nine other trim options: WT (MSRP $36,800), Custom (MSRP $43,600), LT (MSRP $48,000), RST (MSRP $51,400), Custom Trail Boss (MSRP $51,800), LTZ (MSRP $57,200), LT Trail Boss (MSRP $58,000), High Country (MSRP $62,700), and ZR2 (MSRP $69,900).[a] There is an additional package for the ZR2 trim.
The sleek interior offers a 13.4-inch infotainment center with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility and built-in Google for all your entertainment needs. Real wood trim and leather seating surfaces come standard on all trims to add extra comfort and style to your day.

Four-wheel drive is available on the WT, LT, RST, Custom Trail Boss, LTZ, LT Trail Boss, High Country, and ZR2 trims.

Suburban: The Family SUV

The Suburban makes an excellent family SUV with seating up to nine and 144.7 cu.ft. of max cargo volume. US News agrees, giving it the Best Large SUV in their 2023 Best Cars For Families awards. It can also tow up to 8,300 lbs, perfect for a camper, small trailer, or boat.

The Silverado has three ten-speed automatic transmission engine options, two of which are V8 EcoTec3 with Dynamic Fuel Management, which puts the Suburban at an EPA-estimated 20 MPG on the highway. The Turbo Diesel option raises that EPA estimation to 27 MPG highway.

There are six trim options for the Suburban: LS (MSRP $59,200), LT (MSRP $64,700), RST (MSRP $67,300), Z71 (MSRP $69,300), Premier (MSRP $72,600), and High Country (MSRP $79,900).[a] Nine colors are available for exterior paint options, while the interior comes in Jet Black or Jet Black/Mocha.

Your passengers will have plenty of legroom inside the cabin, even in the third row. Second-row passengers can enjoy their own media system to connect headsets, smartphones, and portable DVD players to the screens inside the front seats. With built-in Google, the front passenger and driver can enjoy infotainment options on the center touchscreen.

Four-wheel drive is available on the LS, LT, Z71, RST, Premier, and High Country trims.

Tahoe: Style For Every Mile

At first glance, you might mistake the Tahoe for a smaller version of the Suburban. They do share similarities, but the Tahoe has its separate identity. This full-sized SUV has style to spare, giving drivers a lot of luxury with the ability to trailer up to 8,400 lbs. The four-corner air ride suspension makes for a smoother, more comfortable ride by adjusting the suspension to conditions on the road. It can go higher for better clearance or lower to promote better efficiency. The 122.9 cu.ft. of max cargo space, seating for eight, and an EPA-estimated 21 MPG in the city and 28 MPG on the highway make it an excellent choice for carpooling or family vacations.

The Tahoe has six trims: LS (MSRP $56,200), LT (MSRP $61,700), RST (MSRP $64,300), Z71 (MSRP $66,300), Premier (MSRP $69,600), and High Country (MSRP $76,900).[a] The RST trim has one additional package. Jet Black or Gideon/Very Dark Atmosphere interiors are well-complimented with any of the nine exterior colors.

The center 10.2-inch touch screen has available Google built-in and Wi-Fi connectivity. The 12-inch driver information center will provide all the information you need when you’re behind the wheel, including seeing the 13 available camera views.

Four-wheel Drive is available on the LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, and High Country Trims.

Trailblazer: Friendly & Fun

You’d be hard-pressed to find a subcompact SUV that’s more fun than the Trailblazer. From its sleek but friendly body style to the cozy interior, it screams that it’s the type of vehicle that’s just plain fun to drive. It feels just as at home exploring the great outdoors as it does under the neon lights of a big city.

The hands-free liftgate and 54.4 cu.ft. of available cargo volume make packing more manageable. It seats five and gives an impressive 39.4 in of rear seat legroom to back seat passengers. With an EPA-estimated 29 MPG in the city and 33 MPG on the highway, the Trailblazer gives you more room without a significant cost increase at the pump. Because of the lower fuel costs and the budget-friendly starting prices, it makes an excellent choice for young drivers.

The Trailblazer has four trims: LS (MSRP $23,100), LT (MSRP $24,300), RS (MSRP $27,100), and ACTIV (MSRP $27,100).[a]

Keeping in the friendly, fun spirit of the compact SUV, there are nine exterior colors and the option to mix and match most of these with a white, black, or crimson metallic roof. It has a restyled grille, front end, taillamps, and headlamps, and the new option of 19-inch high-gloss black wheels. Wireless device charging and an 11-inch touchscreen make staying connected and entertained a breeze.

All-wheel drive is available on the LS, LT, ACTIV, and RS trims.

AWD or 4WD: What Do I Choose?

Ultimately, that is up to your preferences, what you do with your vehicle, and what driving conditions you often face. As with most things, there are pros and cons to each. We’ve talked about how they both work, and we’ve talked about some trucks and SUVs that have either option; now, let’s get into the information you need to decide which will work best for you.

One benefit of All-Wheel Drive is not having to manually engage the system, which can especially be helpful when you need four-wheel traction but don’t have a chance to switch over from Two-Wheel Drive mode. If you’re looking for additional traction on ice, snow, or mud, it’s a solid choice. AWD handles better on normal road conditions than FWD.

However, AWD vehicles generally have a higher up-front cost than 2WD vehicles and can cost more money to maintain. The extra weight needed can lower your fuel economy. It’s important to remember that AWD only helps with acceleration and traction; it will not reduce your braking distances.

On the other hand, four-wheel drive vehicles have better fuel economy because they operate in two-wheel drive mode most of the time. It’s better for off-roading situations and can help with towing because of the ease of switching between drive modes.

The resale value of vehicles with FWD is generally higher than with AWD. The downside is that many drivers only use four-wheel drive a few times a year, making the higher upfront cost of vehicles with 2WD less practical.

You have to be prepared to switch to 4WD drive mode, which can be difficult if a situation arises unexpectedly. The additional components in Four-Wheel Drive systems mean more maintenance and a higher potential risk of failure.

It can be a difficult decision to make. We would be happy to help you figure it out. One thing that isn’t a difficult decision is choosing a Chevy. Great options are waiting for you whether you choose All-Wheel Drive or Four-Wheel Drive.
