Because of this, you may be overwhelmed by the number of options now offered. After all, how many SUVs can anyone possibly need? Chevy’s current lineup includes seven different crossovers and SUVs, each with its own special personality and list of talents. As your premier certified used SUV dealer, we here at DePaula Chevrolet understand that narrowing down which Chevy model will best fit your driving needs can be difficult.

So, if you’re hesitant about adopting the SUV lifestyle or just need help figuring out which of the seven is ideal for your life and drive style, we’ve compiled this introductory guide to each Chevy SUV currently in production. Not only will you be able to put a personality to the name, but you’ll know what to look for when you’re ready to start shopping for a Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) Chevy SUV. Granted, some things have changed over the past six model years, which is the oldest a vehicle can be to qualify for Chevy’s CPO program. Still, those who are curious about the exact differences between the Trax and Traverse can start here.

Chevy’s SUVs fall into three categories: compact, mid-size, and full-size. Let’s look at these categories and the fantastic SUVs that fall into each to help you decide which Chevy SUV is right for you. If you still need help deciding, we welcome you to come down to our dealership, and our friendly and knowledgeable sales team will be more than happy to help you find that perfect Chevy SUV.

The Big Guys

Chevy’s larger SUVs tend to get a lot of attention and might be what comes to mind when you think of an SUV. After all, the Suburban was America’s first SUV and is so famous it has its own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. But there are more options for drivers who need more than five seats. The Traverse, Tahoe, and Suburban are Chevy’s “Big Three,” big on size, comfort, and capability.

The Suburban is the Big Guy on Chevy’s campus, purposefully designed for drivers who need plenty of room for people and cargo alike. You can select models with seating for up to nine passengers, tow up to 8,300 lbs, and get an available 144.7 cu.ft. of cargo space that appears when the rear seat rows are folded. The Tahoe is similar to the Suburban in that it offers three rows of seating for up to nine passengers; however, it’s a little smaller, with just 122.9 cu.ft. of cargo space, though a properly equipped Tahoe can tow a little more, with a maximum rating of 8,400 lbs.

Calling the Traverse, the little sibling seems counter-intuitive, as it is still a three-row SUV. However, it’s designed to hold seven to eight passengers, with many models offering standard second-row captains chairs. It also still manages to comfortably carry 98.2 cu.ft. of stuff and has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 lbs. Though these are Chevy’s largest SUVs, keep in mind that there are four more options that might fit your needs better.

The Little Ones

If big and bold isn’t your style, then perhaps you’re looking for one of Chevy’s more compact crossover SUVs: the Trax or the Trailblazer. You might be surprised that the Trax has an overall length of 167.6 inches. For comparison, the Chevy Malibu has an overall length of 194.2 inches. Chevy has acknowledged that the Trax is the intended heir for the Malibu’s throne, and keeping this compact SUV small is part of the deal. To that point, fuel economy is also surprisingly sedan-like, with the Trax providing 24 MPG in the city and 32 MPG on the highway. Plus, it still offers 48.4 cu.ft. of cargo space with the rear seats folded. Though it’s small, all-wheel drive is available, giving drivers greater control in slippery conditions.

The Chevy Trailblazer has a more rugged reputation for a good reason. The ACTIV trim was specifically designed for off-roading, increasing its appeal for those drivers who aren’t necessarily confined to the pavement. A sense of adventure isn’t required, of course. There are plenty of Trailblazer trims that are happy to stick to the road well traveled. The Trailblazer also exceeds expectations when it comes to cargo. With the rear seats folded, it has 54.4 cu.ft. of cargo space, and with the front passenger seat folded, it can accommodate objects up to 8.5 feet long. Add the two-tiered reversible cargo floor in the rear hold, and there are plenty of options for getting things to their destination safely. For drivers who aren’t looking for a whole lot of space but appreciate a comfortable interior, these smaller crossover SUVs may be ideal. Known for being easy to park and fun to drive, the Trax and Traverse are great for drivers who are new to SUVs, too.

Everything in Between

So what about the drivers who need a little bit of both but not in polarizing quantities? For example, they might only need seats for up to five passengers, but a big cargo area would also be helpful. Maybe all-wheel drive and enough traction and power to get through gravel, mud, and snow is a priority. The Chevy Equinox and Chevy Blazer are designed for exactly this SUV gray area.

The Equinox is ideal for drivers who need extra space for all of their stuff, whether it’s groceries, antiques, bookbags, science projects, camping equipment, or whatever you plan to bring home from a trip to wine country. Chevy grants that wish with 29.9 cu.ft. of cargo space, which increases to 63.9 when the rear seats are folded. Also on board, each Equinox is the Chevy Safety Assist suite of driver assistance technology, including forward collision alert with following distance indicator, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane keep assist with lane departure warning, and IntelliBeam automatic high beams.

The Blazer has a reputation for being stylish, both inside and out. Its cargo space is similar to the Equinox, with 30.5 cu.ft. behind the rear seat or 64.2 cu.ft. with the rear seat folded. It also offers the Chevy Safety Assist technology as standard across the line. However, the Blazer’s chiseled facade demonstrates its dedication to a certain aesthetic, reflected in its upscale features and spacious seating area. Those looking for the most comprehensive set of innovative tech, comfort features, and appearance packages may wish to linger when checking out the Blazer.
