A popular car for sale near you, a red 2020 Chevy Sonic Hatchback, is parked in front of a modern home.

There are many drivers who visit our dealership to ask, “are there any cars for sale near me, that provide a compact experience, while at the same time providing some of the benefits of a crossover?” While there are a number of vehicles that fit that description at our dealership, when you visit DePaula Chevy, our team might likely point out something like the 2020 Chevy Sonic with the RS package. The RS is just one package offered on the Chevy Sonic, a subcompact hatchback or sedan that can provide a truly remarkable driving experience. At DePaula Chevy, we’re all about your individual automotive needs. Our team will always go that extra step to ensure that the car you buy doesn’t just cover the basics, but keeps you thrilled and engaged throughout your time of ownership. It is our belief that there is a car out there for everyone, and for some of our drivers, the 2020 Chevy Sonic may be the ideal fit.

A Preview of Price and Trims

The Chevy Sonic may be a small car, but it is mighty. When you visit our showroom to check out a model, you’ll likely be surprised by the rather affordable price, which has a low MSRP of $16,720. Although, just because the Chevy Sonic is on the cheaper end, doesn’t mean that you’re in for a cheap driving experience. The Chevy Sonic comes in a wide array of trim options, which include the LS Sedan, LT Hatch, LT Sedan, Premier Hatch, and Premier Sedan. And yes, this means that the Chevy Sonic can be purchased as either a sedan body styling or hatchback.

Amongst the variety of add-ons and packages, is the RS package, which is standard in the hatchback model, but standard in the sedan. With the RS package, you’ll find a number of additional features that not only elevate the look of the Chevy Sonic but the performance as well.

Speaking of looks, the Chevy Sonic makes an interesting impression at first glance. The Chevy Sonic stands out in an automotive world filled with SUVs, and it does so in a good way, using a vast color palette to call attention to itself. Two colors, in particular, are not often found in comparable vehicles, Oasis Blue and Cayenne Orange Metallic. The Chevy Sonic is the quirky member of the Chevy brand family, but that quirk pays off in more ways that one.

Driving the 2020 Chevy Sonic

A silver 2020 Chevy Sonic sedan is parked in front of a modern home near Albany, NY.

Considering the size of the Chevy Sonic, you won’t need a lot of power to propel the vehicle forward. The Sonic uses a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 138 horsepower and 148 lb-ft of torque. While these may seem like small numbers compared to bigger models like the Chevy Trax or even the Chevy Equinox, this is a car that doesn’t need much engine power to launch forward. A 6-speed automatic transmission is standard in the Chevy Sonic, as is front-wheel drive that gets the job done. A huge benefit of the Chevy Sonic’s compact size makes handling sharp and snappy. When pushed to the limit, the Chevy Sonic can really sprint, and the rather robust suspension system, makes the experience feel seamless, yet stable.

The RS package heightens the performance of the Chevy Sonic, adding in some additional gear that is both stylistic and practical. As we mentioned before, the RS package is standard in the hatchback model but optional in the sedan body styling. Accompanying this package is a rear spoiler and body kit that enhances the sportiness of the Chevy Sonic. Other visual add-ons in this package include black Chevy bowtie badges, floor mats slapped with the RS-logo, black interior accents, and an upholstery styling that you won’t find in other models.

All totaled the Chevy Sonic is an underdog of the Chevy brand family. When pushed to its limits, drivers can expect some zippy performance, even with that small 1.4-liter turbocharged engine. And fortunately, you can go pretty far without refilling your tank thanks to that compact engine build. The 2020 Chevy Sonic has an estimated fuel economy of 26 MPG in the city and 34 MPG on the highway, and a huge reason for this is the sizing choices that Chevy made in designing this compact car. Although, one major question our customers ask about the Chevy Sonic is what the interior has to offer.

A Step Inside the Cabin

Sure, the Chevy Sonic may be a subcompact car, but it isn’t uncomfortably small. While you won’t find spacing like the Chevy Suburban inside something like the Chevy Sonic, what’s here is substantial for its category. What works in favor of the Chevy Sonic is the option of a hatchback version, which expands on the interior spacing that’s offered in the sedan variant. Cargo spacing, for example, is 14.9 cubic feet in the sedan, but 19 cubic feet behind with the rear seats fold down. And in the hatchback model, you can expand on the offered cargo spacing by folding down that rear seat. When at its peak, the Chevy Sonic can offer up to 47.7 cubic feet of cargo spacing in total.

Cloth upholstery and soft-touch plastic are standard for the Chevy Sonic, although upgrades add-in some higher-grade materials to enjoy. And on the subject of interior experience, the Chevy Sonic starts out pretty well-established. Base models get a 7.0-inch infotainment system that is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connective, meaning you’ll have access to all of your smartphone applications while on the road. Upgrade that base model to the Premier trim, and you’ll find a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a digital instrument gauge, a bigger speaker system, and power features. And while base models ride on a pretty solid set of 15-inch wheels, you can upgrade to 17-inch alloy wheels in the Premier trim.

A Brief Look at Safety Features

The Chevy Sonic is a modern car, so you can expect some pretty modern safety features packed onboard of most models. While you will get the standard safety gear, such as seatbelts and airbags, in base models, this package can be easily upgraded to host more advanced features. Safety add-ons available in the Chevy Sonic include things like blind-spot monitors, forward-collision warnings, and rear parking sensors. These are features that are proactive, working to protect drivers on the road, by helping them avoid collisions. Needless to say, when upgraded properly, the Chevy Sonic can provide a truly seamless and fun-filled driving experience.
