What is a Crossover SUV?

Before we look at the various models of crossover SUVs available from Chevy, we should take a moment to consider what makes a crossover different from a traditional SUV. The main difference is in how they are designed and manufactured related to the frame and body of the vehicle. A traditional SUV is built like a truck: it has a frame on the underside that connects to the wheels and the suspension, with a body then attached to the frame. This is referred to as “body on frame” construction and provides full-size SUVs like the Tahoe and Suburban with a lot of strength and power while making them ideal for rough terrain.

Crossover models, on the other hand, are designed more like cars. They have a body and frame built as a single unit that the exterior panels are then fitted to. This is called “unibody” construction, and it provides more strength with a lighter design, offering excellent handling and great safety features. There are still situations where a body-on-frame construction is a better choice, and you will typically find it with full-size SUVs, but the vast majority of SUVs on the market are technically crossovers.

So, the simple way to look at it is that traditional SUVs are designed in a way similar to a truck, while crossover SUVs are designed more like a car. From the outside, they look a lot alike, and many manufacturers have used SUV styling and power in their crossover designs. The lines have blurred a bit, and you can easily find people that use the two terms interchangeably, but within the industry, they still have separate, clear meanings.

Chevy Crossover Models

The vast majority of vehicles in Chevy’s SUV lineup are, in fact, crossover models with a unibody design, rather than traditional, body-on-frame SUVs. The only two models that have a truck-like design are the large Suburban and Tahoe. Chevy Trailblazer

One of the latest crossover models from Chevrolet, the Chevy Trailblazer is a small SUV with two rows of seating perfect for up to five people. As its name would suggest, the Trailblazer is designed for adventure and has more than 54 cu.ft. of interior cargo space, making it perfect for tailgate parties, camping trips, and errands. With numerous trims to choose from and a wide range of luxury and technology features both standard and available, the Trailblazer is a fantastic choice for anyone with an active lifestyle.

Chevy Trax

The Chevy Trax has been around for a while now and has proven to be a popular and affordable option year after year. This is also a small crossover with seating for up to five people, making it perfect for a new family or someone that likes to be the favored driver in a group of friends. You get over 48 cu.ft. of interior cargo space with the Trax, so it is not quite as spacious inside as the Trailblazer, but it remains a fantastic pick.

Chevy Equinox

Chevy’s most popular SUV, the Equinox, has a similar design to most of the other models in Chevy’s lineup, with two rows of seating for up to five people. You get almost 64 cu.ft. of interior cargo space with the Chevy Equinox, however, which is quite a bit more than the smaller Trax or Trailblazer. While not everyone is going to need that kind of space, if you want to be able to pack a lot into your crossover, then this is a terrific option.

Chevy Blazer

The first of two midsize crossover models, the Chevy Blazer (not to be confused with the Trailblazer) is a terrific option for a wide range of drivers. This model has two rows of seating for up to five passengers, but its strong and impressive design gives it 4,500 lbs of maximum towing capacity. If you are looking for a great crossover for enjoying the outdoors, with more than 64 cu.ft. of interior cargo space and the power to tow a boat, the Blazer is a top choice.

Chevy Traverse

Finally, the Chevy Traverse is the largest crossover in the Chevrolet lineup, putting it close to the size and power that a full-size SUV can offer. This is still a midsize model, but it has three rows of seating for up to eight people, plus over 98 cu.ft. of interior cargo space. The Traverse also gives you up to 5,000 lbs of towing capacity, so this is a terrific option if you have a growing family, a large group of friends, or simply want to load up for a long camping trip.
