  Engine and Power

  Although a powerful engine might not be your primary concern with a small SUV, it is still important and dictates a lot about your driving experience and how your vehicle will perform. When it comes to the engines in the 2020 Chevy Equinox and Honda CR-V, there really is not much of a competition: the Chevrolet clearly comes out on top.

  By comparison, there are two different engines available for the 2020 Chevy Equinox, so you can choose the one that best meets your needs. The standard one is a 1.5L Turbo 4-cylinder engine a lot like the one in the CR-V, but it offers up to 170 hp and 203 lb-ft of torque. You can see there is a bit of a tradeoff there, but overall it is pretty comparable.

  The available engine, however, is a 2.0L Turbo 4-cylinder beauty that provides up to 252 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. There is no question here, this engine is far more powerful than the CR-V can manage, and with the 9-speed automatic transmission it comes with, the Equinox is incredibly fun to drive. All this power gives the 2020 Chevy Equinox up to 3,500 lbs of towing when properly equipped, while the Honda CR-V tops out at 1,500 lbs.

  With the 2020 Honda CR-V, you only get one option for the engine, so if you want something more powerful, then you are out of luck. It is a 1.5L Turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that offers up to 190 hp and 179 lb-ft of torque. That is pretty good for a small SUV and probably makes for a decent driving experience, but it is nothing to really swoon over.

• Interior and Technology

  The interior features and options depend a lot on which trim level you are looking at, but with that in mind, the 2020 Chevy Equinox comes out on top in some key ways. To keep things simple, we will look at the highest trims for both of these vehicles. That is the Premier for the Equinox and the Touring for the 2020 Honda CR-V.

  The Equinox Premier features perforated, leather-appointed seats, including an 8-way power adjustable driver’s seat and an available 8-way power adjustable front passenger seat. Two driver preset memory settings are standard for the Premier, including driver seat and outside mirror preferences. The front seats are heated, which is available for the leather-wrapped steering wheel that features controls for audio, phone, and cruise control. Dual-zone automatic climate control is included with the Premier, and heated rear seats are available for extra comfort.

  A number of great features are also available with the Honda CR-V Touring, though it falls short in some ways. The power-adjustable driver seat includes two memory positions, but the available front passenger seat is only 4-way power adjustable. The leather-trimmed seats are heated in the front, though there is no option for heated rear seats. The Touring includes dual-zone automatic climate control, as well as a leather-wrapped steering wheel with controls. Altogether, the CR-V is good, but the options do not quite reach the same level as you can choose with the Equinox.

  Tech Options

  Great tech features are more important than ever before, and the ones you can get in the 2020 Chevy Equinox are particularly impressive. Since these can depend on the trim level you look at, so we will continue looking at the Equinox Premier and the CR-V Touring.

  The 2020 Chevy Equinox Premier features an 8-inch HD touchscreen display with available Navigation, as well as an available 7-speaker Bose premium sound system. It has a wireless charging pad, support for both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and features a 4-inch driver information display. The Premier has keyless open and start, along with remote start, a universal home remote, and numerous USB ports. You also get a 120-volt power outlet for charging devices like laptops, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror to help you avoid being blinded by the headlights of other drivers.

  By comparison, the 2020 Honda CR-V Touring offers a 7-inch touchscreen display with Navigation and a premium audio system. There is a wireless phone charger, support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and push-button start. The CR-V Touring also has an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and while the interior tech features are good overall, the smaller Infotainment display and a few other missing features place it behind what the Equinox Premier has to offer.

  Available and standard safety features on the 2020 Chevy Equinox include StabiliTrak with electronic stability and traction control, LED daytime running lamps, and a comprehensive airbag system. You can also get an HD rear vision camera with the Equinox, along with automatic emergency braking, rear park assist, and front pedestrian braking. The Equinox has a lane change alert with side blind zone alert, a forward collision alert and following distance indicator, and lane keep assist with a lane departure warning all available. Adaptive cruise control and a safety alert seat, which sends warnings through vibrations in the seat rather than just an auditory warning, are also available.

  2020 Honda CR-V

  The 2020 Honda CR-V has vehicle stability assist with traction control, along with LED daytime running lights. The CR-V includes a forward collision warning, lane departure warning, and collision mitigation braking. You also get numerous airbags in the CR-V, and other available safety features include a blind spot monitoring system with cross traffic monitor, lane keeping assist system, and adaptive cruise control. There is no safety alert seat available on the CR-V, however, which means you have to rely only on auditory alerts.
