When it comes to full-size, light-duty pickups, you have a lot of different trucks to choose from, which can make it difficult to figure out which one is right for you. Trying to look at five or six trucks simultaneously can get pretty overwhelming really quickly, so it is better to compare them two at a time and see how they stack up. For example, consider the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 vs 2020 Ram 1500 and look at what each of them brings to the table to see which one meets all of your needs.

As you look at these two trucks, it is important to consider everything they have to offer and how raw numbers translate into real performance. For example, you might be able to get slightly more torque from an engine in the Ram 1500, but the 2020 Chevy Silverado offers greater horsepower and towing capacity. While bragging about having the most torque can be fun on a Saturday night, come Monday morning, the pickup that can haul more cargo across town is going to be the winner. Not to mention the fact that the Silverado also starts off at a lower price, so you can pick up the tab on the weekend as you remind your Ram-loving friends that you saved a few grand.

The 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 also has some really impressive safety features, including some that you simply cannot get on the 2020 Ram 1500. All things being equal, these are both very good trucks, but the Silverado from Chevy just comes out on top in some key ways. With a 10-speed transmission that you will not find on the Ram truck, the Silverado gives you better towing and is a joy to drive. Come see the 2020 Silverado 1500 for yourself and find your next hard-working pickup.

  • Performance

Engine Choices and Power on the Silverado

There is no doubt that the engine is arguably the most important part of any powerful pickup truck, which is why it is so good to see five different engines available in the 2020 Chevy Silverado, with two different versions of one of them available based on trim choice. It starts with a 4.3L EcoTec3 V6 engine that offers up to 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque, which is pretty good for a jumping-off point. From there, you can upgrade to a 2.7L Turbo engine that provides up to 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque.

There is an available 5.3L EcoTec3 V8 engine that offers up to 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque, which comes with either a 6-speed or 8-speed automatic transmission depending on trim. There is also a Duramax 3.0L Turbo-Diesel available that offers up to 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Finally, there is a 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine available, which provides you with up to 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. Both the Turbo-Diesel and the 6.2L V8 engine come paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission that makes the Silverado a real joy to drive.

Engine Choices and Power on the Ram

By comparison, the 2020 Ram 1500 has three different engines available, and one of them has two versions to choose from. The starting engine in the Ram pickup is a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine that provides up to 305 hp and 269 lb-ft of torque. When you compare that to the starting engine in the Chevy Silverado, you see they are pretty comparable; the Chevy engine offers more torque while the Ram engine gives you a bit more horsepower. But as soon as you upgrade to any of the available engines on the Chevy, you leave the Ram well behind.

The next engine that is available in the 2020 Ram 1500 is a 5.7L HEMI V8 engine that offers up to 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. There is also a version of this engine you can choose that features eTorque, which is basically a hybrid system that includes a battery-powered motor to generate additional torque and help with extra towing capacity. Finally, there is a 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 engine you can choose, which provides up to 260 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque.

    Who Comes Out on Top?

As you can see, this diesel option does give you greater torque than any of the engines in the Silverado, but only by 20 lb-ft. Meanwhile, the Silverado’s 6.2L V8 engine with 460 lb-ft of torque also comes with 420 hp, which is well over 100 hp more than the diesel engine in the Ram. When you compare them point by point, the Silverado really comes out on top.

  • Towing and Payload Capacity

A blue 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500, which wins when comparing the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 vs 2020 Ram 1500, is towing a large trailer with two side by sides loaded on it.

    Towing and Payload

While looking at engines and other specs on trucks is great, you can end up with a lot of numbers that do not really mean much to you. More horsepower and torque can make for a better driving experience, but ultimately you want to see how those numbers translate into the real world. That often comes down to two things: payload and towing capacity.

Who has a Greater Payload: the Silverado 1500 or the Ram 1500?

These can change depending on how you configure your vehicle, so we will just take a look at the best-case scenario for both of these trucks. The 2020 Chevy Silverado has a maximum payload of up to 2,250 lbs. The 2020 Ram 1500, on the other hand, has a maximum payload of up to 2,300 lbs. So, to be fair, the Ram pickup does offer greater payload, but by a very small amount. It is quite unlikely that you will ever actually utilize 50 lbs of difference in payload.

Which Tows More: the Silverado 1500 or the Ram 1500?

On the other hand, there is a much larger discrepancy in terms of towing capacity. Maximum towing for the 2020 Silverado, when properly configured and with the right engine, is up to 13,400 lbs. With the 2020 Ram 1500, however, maximum towing, even when equipped with the best configuration, peaks at 12,750 lbs. That is a difference of nearly 700 lbs, which you are much more likely to run into if you are towing a lot of weight behind you. This might not be a make or break difference, but it is something to consider if towing is a serious and important consideration for you.

    Safety Features

Any truck you choose needs to keep you safe on the road, and fortunately, these are both very safe pickups. You can get great safety features on each of these vehicles, but the Silverado pulls ahead in a few key ways that are worth pointing out. In particular, if you have a young driver you want to teach with your truck, then the Chevy is definitely the better option.

Safety Features on the Chevy Silverado

Standard safety features on the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 include six airbags and StabiliTrak with electronic stability and traction control. Available safety features on the Silverado include electronic trailer sway control to help you stay safe while towing and hitch guidance with hitch view that lets you easily see where your trailer is while backing up. You will also find lane change alert and both front and rear park assist. There is also a teen driver system that lets you disable and enable certain features to help new drivers learn good habits and stay safer on the road.

Safety Features on the Ram 1500

The 2020 Ram 1500 has some great safety features available, including blind spot monitoring that works with trailer detection to help you stay safer while towing. A lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control system are also available to protect you while driving. The lack of a teen driver system can be a big issue, however, especially if you have a young driver that you want to teach to become safe behind the wheel with your truck.
