If you are in the market for a light-duty truck that makes a great first impression, you should be comparing the differences between the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 vs 2020 Toyota Tundra. Even though the Silverado is an American truck and the Tundra is a Japanese model, the two share a lot in common.

For example, both are great trucks for construction workers who need to transport a crew to a job site. They can also work well for families who need to utilize the truck for city driving as well as off-roading. If you like to hit the lake on the weekends, these are the two trucks to compare.

The Chevy Silverado is available in eight trims and has one of the most highly functional beds on the market. The Tundra is available in six trims and has been recognized for holding its value over time. However, most people who buy a truck usually don’t sell it. Trucks have a tendency to stay in the family for quite some time.

In order to truly understand the differences between the Chevy Silverado and Toyota Tundra, you need to compare the performance stats, interior features, and exterior styling elements. Let’s dive right in.

  • Performance

There are five different engine options that vary according to the trim level on the 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500. The Work Truck, LT and RST models are fitted with a turbocharged 2.7L engine that generates 310 hp and 348 lb-ft of torque. Mated with an 8-speed automatic transmission and start-stop technology, this model has a fuel economy set at 20 mpg combined (19 city/22 highway). It can also tow up to 7,100 pounds depending on the configuration. Next is a 4.3L V6 engine that produces 285 hp and 305 lb-ft of torque and is available on the Work Truck, Custom, and Custom Trail Boss trims. Coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission, it has a fuel economy set at 18 mpg combined (16 city/21 highway). The trade-off for the lower fuel economy is a higher towing capacity. It can pull 7,900 pounds.

The third option is a 5.3L V8 engine that pumps out 355 hp and 383 lb-ft of torque and is mated with either a 6- or 8-speed automatic transmission. It can haul 11,600 pounds with the max trailering package. Next is a turbodiesel 3.0L I-6 engine that generates 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. With a 10-speed automatic transmission and start-stop technology, it has an impressive fuel economy set at 27 mpg combined (23 city/33highway). Finally, the 6.2L V8 engine generates an impressive 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque and is only available on select trims. Featuring a 10-speed automatic transmission, it can pull 13,400 pounds. It also gets about 18 mpg combined (16 city/20 highway).

    2020 Toyota Tundra

As for the Toyota Tundra, it is powered by a robust 5.7L i-Force V8 engine that produces 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque. Coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift mode and uphill/downhill shift logic, it has a fuel economy set at 15 mpg combined (13 city/18 highway). That is a significantly lower fuel economy than any of the engine options on the Silverado. You might think that the Tundra will have a higher maximum towing capacity, but it doesn’t. It can pull up to 10,100 pounds, which is quite a bit less than the Silverado. So, the low gas mileage trade-off may not be worth it in this case.
