You’re certain that the compact SUV route is for you, but remember that similar pricing does not necessarily mean you’re getting the same features. When looking at the 2022 Chevy Equinox vs the 2022 Jeep Compass, you need to keep this fact in mind. While there are plenty of available features on both models, it’s important to dive deeper and see what comes standard and what doesn’t. We’re excited to help you do just that today.

Some of the key features to look for when buying a compact SUV are safety, cargo space, and fuel economy. You want as many standard driver assist features as possible, even on base-level trims. You’ll also want the model that has the largest cargo capacity to haul your adventure equipment and occasional guests. That's where the 2022 Chevy Equinox comes in.

While both models are efficient, Chevy includes more standard features on the 2022 Equinox than Jeep does on the Compass. The Equinox also comes with more cargo space. Furthermore, these two models fall into the same pricing category, so these minor details make all the difference. We recommend that you check out the 2022 Chevy Equinox in person to test out its standard features, but we’ve got the specs you need to get you started in the decision-making process.

  • Interior

The black and tan interior of a 2022 Chevy Equinox shows the steering wheel and infotainment screen.

Your vehicle’s interior is the place you should care about most. It’s where you’re spending a good chunk of your time. As a result, it’s important that the interior offers plenty of space and convenience. When you want all of this at an affordable level, the Equinox outperforms the Compass.

A Look Inside the Chevy Equinox and the Jeep Compass

The 2022 Chevy Equinox is designed with cargo in mind. While many compact SUV models feel cramped and lack storage space, the new Equinox offers up to 63.9 cubic feet of cargo room. You can quickly turn this into a two-passenger model thanks to the 60/40 rear folding bench seats, which make it easy to fit everything you need to go camping or head to the ski resort. There’s even a hidden floor cargo compartment you can use for smaller items before loading up the Equinox.

There are also several standard convenience features on the Equinox, even when you choose the base-level trim. The base-level LT trim includes a keyless push-button start, and the lower-level LT trim comes with a sunglasses holder, USB charging ports, and steering wheel controls. All trim levels also include access to Chevrolet Connected Services, some of which are included for free. One of these free features is Chevy’s Smart Driver, which monitors your driving, gives you tips, and helps you get better deals on car insurance. Another one of these free features is a built-in appointment scheduler that pairs with your dealership so you can easily schedule and remember your maintenance appointments.

The new Compass, on the other hand, has only a maximum of 59.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and it doesn’t offer special cargo features like the Equinox does. Further, Jeep has included its Uconnect 5 system. Both models include handy features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto for music streaming, USB charging ports, push-button start, and size upgrade options for their infotainment systems. When you upgrade either vehicle to a higher trim, you’ll get access to wireless device charging, heated and ventilated seating, and driver memory. But when you want to stay at the lower end of the trim spectrum, Chevy offers the better deal.

    Under the Hood

Compact SUVs aren’t designed for power and towing like their larger counterparts. Instead, they’re best suited for casual towing and better fuel economy. When it comes to the fuel tank, both the 2022 Chevy Equinox and the 2022 Jeep Compass perform well. The Equinox and Compass are both close when it comes to horsepower. The Equinox produces 170 horsepower, whereas the Compass is only 10 ahead at 180 horsepower. However, while the Compass has slightly better horsepower, it falls behind when it comes to torque, producing 172 lb-ft as compared to the Equinox's 203 lb-ft of torque. The 2022 Chevy Equinox and the 2022 Jeep Compass both come in either front-wheel or all-wheel drivetrains, but no matter which drivetrain you choose, you’ll still get better gas mileage with the Equinox.

  • Safety

Safety Is One of the Most Important Things

Safety features are high on the list when it comes to buying any new vehicle. Compact SUVs are generally safer than cars because they’re larger, but it’s still good to have some reliable driver-assist features in your corner. Many brands are getting better about offering more standard driver assist features. Chevy has been doing this for a while now, thanks to their standard Chevy Safety Assist suit, which is included on the 2022 Chevy Equinox no matter what trim level you choose. This suite includes Forward Collision Alert, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Front Pedestrian Braking. It also adds in Lane Keep Assist, Lane Departure Warning, a Following Distance Indicator, along with IntelliBeam High Beam Assist.

The automatic braking features will stop the Equinox when another vehicle, object, or person is within its field. Lane Keep Assistance and Departure Warning are there to keep drivers centered in the appropriate lane, while the Following Distance Indicator feature helps prevent rear-end accidents.

The Equinox also includes a standard rear vision camera, and most importantly, GM’s trademark Teen Driver Mode. This mode is designed for young drivers. It helps guardians monitor their teens through vehicle tracking, volume and speed limits, and grade card monitoring which records the teen’s driving skills. Overall, thanks to its design and these features, the 2022 Chevy Equinox has a 5-star Overall Safety Rating.

The 2022 Jeep Compass is the first of its model years to see standard safety features. It now includes five standard safety features of its own, which include Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, lane technologies, Pedestrian Detection, and Automatic Braking. However, features such as Teen Driver mode are not available for this model. When it comes to safety, the 2022 Chevy Equinox is the best bet.

  • Exterior

A blue 2022 Chevy Equinox is shown from the side during a 2022 Chevy Equinox vs 2022 Jeep Compass comparison.

Your vehicle’s exterior is mostly about looks but also about convenience. Exterior design is one area where the Equinox and the Compass heavily differ. Both models are visually appealing, but the Equinox offers a surprisingly sportier look.

Take a Look at the Equinox

The Equinox comes in four different trims, but the mid-level RS trim is essentially a sport edition model. The RS model gets upgraded 19-inch black painted wheels, its own special black lower fascia, black side rails, and a black grille. This model’s bowtie emblem is also black. Its exterior color pattern matches its black interior with red stitching. No matter what 2022 Equinox you choose, you’ll get a full-width front grille, a lower panel on the bumper to match, and wide, narrow LED headlamps.

Take a Look at the Compass

The Compass comes with six different trim options, and they’re mostly aesthetically the same aside from the Trailhawk. The Trailhawk trim is made for off-roading, so it includes a front skid plate, along with red tow hooks and its own unique grille. Both the Equinox and the Compass come with a hands-free power liftgate and power-adjustable mirrors with turn signal indicators. Every trim comes with a thin grille and wide lower front paneling. Overall, both models offer proficient aesthetic appeal, but they’re not incredibly similar in regards to looks. It just depends on what style is most appealing to you.
