Shopping for a used SUV doesn’t have to be a hassle; when you work with the right people and choose a dealership that puts your needs first, getting everything you’re looking for becomes a lot easier. But if you’ve been looking at used SUVs for sale near Troy without any luck so far, then it might seem like you’re fighting an uphill battle. Fortunately, you’re not alone in this, and all of us here at DePaula Chevrolet are ready to help you find the right pre-owned SUV with everything you need.

One of the trickiest parts of this, however, is that looking at used options can open up a huge selection of different makes and models for you to choose from. This is great because it provides you with more options to find what you need, but it can also quickly become overwhelming. So today, we’re going to take you through some of our favorite used SUVs across different sizes, with an eye toward certain model years to keep in mind.

The Chevy Trax – A Great Subcompact SUV

Kicking things off, we have the first of three fantastic Chevy models to consider. The Trax is a subcompact SUV, which makes it one of the smallest options in the Chevy lineup and the smallest model on this list. This is an amazing choice if you’re looking for something on a tight budget—it has a very accessible MSRP when sold as new, and it’s even more budget-friendly as you’re considering a pre-owned SUV. For a sporty, nimble vehicle that makes it easy to get around Troy and that’s perfect for trips to Albany, the Chevy Trax is hard to beat.

This is the most recently released model we’ll be looking at today since it just hit the road for the first time with the 2015 model year. The first-generation Trax received a facelift and refresh for 2017, so keep that in mind when looking at used models, particularly if you’re interested in some of the updated features it received, like LED daytime running lights or a more nicely appointed interior. A second-generation version of the Trax is on the way for the 2024 model year, but you won’t find many of them on the used market for a while.

The Chevy Equinox – Compact Size, Big Features

If you’re looking for something a bit larger than the Trax, then the Chevy Equinox is a great place to start. Although it began its life as a midsize SUV in the early 2000s, it’s been a compact model ever since the launch of its third generation in 2018. That’s an important distinction to keep in mind when looking at used options, though you can’t go wrong with any Equinox you choose. The compact design of the Equinox is perfect for small families or groups of friends—or even if you simply want a comfortable and spacious vehicle for driving around Troy on your own or during your daily commute.

First released for the 2005 model year, the Equinox has been around for a while and has proven itself a favorite of many drivers year after year. That means you can find many of them when looking at used vehicles; as we said, its first two generations marked it as a midsize crossover SUV. If you look at second-generation models, remember that they received an update in 2016 with improved features inside and out. The third generation launched in 2018 was similarly updated and refreshed for the 2022 model year, so keep that in mind if you want added features like the street-inspired RS trim.

The Chevy Traverse – Three Rows for Growing Families

The last of our three Chevy recommendations, the Traverse, is an interesting offering that’s growing in popularity in the auto industry. In size, this is not the biggest model available from Chevy and fits somewhere between the midsize Equinox and the larger Tahoe. What’s particularly noteworthy, however, is that the Traverse has three rows of seating inside for up to eight passengers. This is a terrific choice if you have a growing family or a big group of friends and need a vehicle that gives you room to bring them all along when driving around Troy.

Chevy introduced the Traverse for the 2009 model year, which means it’s been around long enough for plenty of them to be available. This first-generation Traverse received a facelift in 2013, so keep that in mind when looking at different models out there. The second-generation launched with the 2018 Traverse, which is available in numerous trim levels and with an impressive twin-clutch all-wheel drive (AWD) on High Country models. Chevy gave this generation a facelift for the 2022 model year with a redesigned front grille and enhanced standard safety tech, which makes it a great choice when shopping for used SUVs.

The Toyota RAV4 – A Reliable Compact SUV

The Toyota RAV4 is one of the most popular vehicles in the world, meaning many of them sell every year. It was the best-selling SUV worldwide in 2019, with the US being one of its largest markets every year—all of that is for good reason. This compact SUV is a terrific choice if you need something that comfortably seats up to five people. Toyota is well known for making some of the most reliable vehicles on the road, so it’s a great one to look for if you want a used SUV that you can count on year after year.

First released for the 1996 model year, the RAV4 has been a leader in the SUV market for nearly 30 years and helped pave the way for SUVs to take over the auto industry in that time. We don’t suggest going quite that far back when looking for pre-owned RAV4 models. Instead, look for a 2013 model at the earliest, when Toyota launched the fourth generation of this impressive SUV. This fourth-gen RAV4 received an update for 2016 with new looks inside and out. For the 2019 model year, the fifth generation of the RAV4 launched along with great hybrid and plug-in hybrid options that you might keep an eye out for.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee – Spacious and Ruggedly Capable

Finally, we have the Jeep Grand Cherokee, which goes back even further than the RAV4 since it was released for the 1993 model year. Following the success of the Wrangler and Cherokee, Jeep wanted something larger to meet the needs of more drivers, which resulted in the development and release of the midsize Grand Cherokee. Much like the Chevy Traverse, this is a great choice if you want something larger than many of the other models we looked at and for getting your family and friends around Troy with you.

When looking for a used Grand Cherokee, keep an eye out for a 2014 model, when the fourth-generation Grand Cherokee received its first update. This was followed by a second facelift and refresh for the 2017 model year, making for a long generation for this midsize SUV. One thing to note is that a longer, three-row version called the Grand Cherokee L was released for the 2021 model year, followed in 2022 by the launch of a third-generation Grand Cherokee with styling and features similar to its bigger sibling.

Ready to Find What You Need?

This is only a small taste of the kinds of impressive pre-owned SUVs you can find out there, but it gives you a sense of how you can start to narrow down your options to ensure you get what you’re looking for. A great way to start is to decide what sorts of features and things are essential to you so you know the bare minimum of what you’re looking for in a used SUV. This makes it easier to eliminate models that won’t work for you, focusing instead on ones that might meet your needs so you can look closer at them. The most important thing is that you take your time, do some research, and check out the details of any vehicle you’re interested in to make sure you get what you need.
