Make the Most of Winter in Clifton Park

Due to current health concerns, please be aware locations may have restrictions.
Winter is just a part of life in the northeastern USA. It occupies a full half of the year – from autumn preparations like changing the wardrobe or installing winter tires in October, through the dark nights of January to the last snowfalls of April. Many of us in and around Clifton Park, NY, even choose which cars to drive or homes to live in based on winter weather considerations.
Perhaps one of the worst things about winter is cabin fever. When it’s cold and windy outside, many of us default to indoor activities, and the reality is that winter is one of the most challenging seasons in terms of staying active and engaged with the community. All the more reason to bundle up and get outside of our comfort zones by trying something new this winter season or visiting places we haven’t been before. To that end, here are our picks for Clifton Park’s best winter offerings!
Cross-Country Skiing and Snowshoeing
Clifton Park’s many trails are a feature of the town that we’ve highlighted before, but hiking is generally off the table from November to April while the ground is covered in snow and mud. Fortunately, the sporting activities of cross-country skiing and snowshoeing allow us to overcome the barrier of soft, slippery snow and continue to enjoy the great outdoors all year long!
You don’t need to go all the way to Gore Mountain or Lapland Lake in the Adirondacks to go skiing and snowshoeing – there’s plenty of trails in and around Clifton Park for your enjoyment! Nearby Saratoga Spa State Park features 12 miles of mapped trails, while Indian Meadows Park’s groomed 3-mile loop in Schenectady is a little more beginner-friendly. Even closer to home are the trails of Kinns Road Park or, of course, the Vischer Ferry Nature and Historic Preserve, offering miles of trails for year-round recreation.
However, if you’re thinking about trying cross-country skiing for the very first time, we absolutely recommend going for beginner lessons right at Clifton Common. Clifton Common is the perfect place to try out skiing. It’s a great way to get some good exercise and fresh air while making the most of Clifton Park all winter long!

Sledding
A fresh snowfall is the perfect time to dig out your sled and take a ride. One of winter’s cheapest and easiest activities, sledding is the perfect way for kids to blow off steam and stay active. Even Clifton Common includes gentle slopes suitable for younger kids, while Huntwood Pocket Park on Huntwood Drive boasts a couple decent hills of its own.
Kinns Road Park, which also offers cross-country skiing, has sledding hills of various grades that you can hike to. Visitors are warned that there’s a lot of trees around, so use extreme caution when choosing a sledding spot there. Wood’s Hollow Nature Preserve has another great hill nearby, so check it out if you’re in the area!
Of course, sledding isn’t just for kids. Nearby ski hills like Gore Mountain frequently offer sledding or tubing experiences suitable for teens and adults – we can assure you from experience that it’s an absolute blast! While sledding can be done anywhere with a slope, always exercise caution and judgment when picking a hill. Look for dangers such as water hazards, roads, rocks, trees, and fences before sledding down a slope. And don’t forget a thermos of fresh hot cocoa!
Ice Skating
Ice skating is a wonderfully diverse winter activity. Skating on small frozen ponds under the open sky is a magical experience, while indoor arenas make it possible to experience this activity in a significantly warmer, more controlled atmosphere. Kids racing each other to the point of exhaustion, couples on a fun, low-key date, folks of all ages daring to learn something new, and friends itching for something fun to do – you’ll find them all on your local ice rink!
Enjoy an enchanting outdoor skate at the Clifton Park Center Road basketball/all-purpose court once the weather is cold enough, or head to downtown Albany’s Empire “Skate” Plaza (rentals available). Public skating sessions on the indoor NHL and Olympic-sized rinks at Saratoga Springs Ice Rinks and the Capital Arena also offer rentals and lessons for novices.
Already got your own skates? The Capital District YMCA – Bethlehem branch in Delmar offers public skating as well, offering another place to go – especially if you’re interested in a tutorial or even hockey programs. In fact, Capital Ice Arena, Saratoga Springs Ice Rinks, and the Albany County Hockey Facility all offer various forms of organized hockey as well. Reach out to the Clifton Park Youth Hockey Association to engage your kids in this fun and exciting sport, or work on your wrist shot during “Stick and Puck” Fridays at Capital Ice Arena.
While ice skating doesn’t always come naturally, don’t let it discourage you from engaging in one of winter’s most-accessible activities! Find an instructor or a friend to guide your way, and you’ll be sailing across the ice in no time. Above all, skate safe and have fun!

Visit a Cozy Restaurant or Bar
While outdoor activities are fun, that cold air can really make you want to warm up with a hot bowl of soup or a cup of cocoa. Luckily, Clifton Park has plenty of warm, cozy restaurants and bars to visit, an especially delightful treat after a fun, cold day outdoors. So pick a nice restaurant and warm up by the fire.
Ravenswood Restaurant is a great place to check out after a day of fun. With a 110” HD wall television and 23 beers on tap, they’ve got a great spot to catch a big game and enjoy a friendly atmosphere that’s at the heart of the Clifton Park community spirit. Wine more your speed? Wheatfield’s Bistro & Wine Bar has you covered, with 20 handmade pasta shapes made fresh daily to go along with your vino.
If you’re feeling like a whiskey, we dare recommend Lake Ridge Restaurant in Round Lake for a fine dining experience like no other around Clifton Park. Over 30 scotches and 20 bourbons feature in their fully-stocked bar, offered alongside an excellent assortment of sandwiches, entrees, and small plates for a genuine “winter warmer” fine dining experience.
The Fun Has Just Begun in Clifton Park!
The community of Clifton Park knows how to celebrate the winter season right.
