Which Car Battery is Right For You?

For most of us when we need to buy a new car battery we rely on getting a battery that is similar to the one we already have in our car.

There are many car batteries for sale at your local car parts store, department store, or another specialty shop.

Not all car batteries for sale are the same. We’ll break down the different types of car batteries and give you a good idea of what all the different options are available to you.

Wet Cell battery: Wet cell batteries are the typical battery that you see in automobiles. They are lead acid batteries that are specifically made to stand the harsh weather and temperatures that the battery will experience while being in your automobile. Wet cell batteries have two popular versions.

The SLI (starting lights ignition) starting battery and a deep cycle (marine) battery.

SLI – These batteries are created to give the best short energy bursts. Think about how your car starts. These batteries give you car fast short bursts of energy that start your engine. They work by providing a greater lead plate count, but thinner dimension. It works by covering more surface area and have a custom material. When you buy your vehicle this is likely to be the default battery that comes with the vehicle. It is also what is recommended when you need a replacement.

Marine Battery – Obviously, a marine battery is used in nautical applications like boats and other vehicles that experience harsher conditions such as extra water exposure and salt water corrosion.

What makes Marine deep cycle batteries a little more interesting is that they will last longer. Designed differently than the SLI marine batteries are designed for more long-term energy delivery. This works by making the bursts of energy not as strong as an SLI battery. Those lead plates we talked about earlier are thicker and can endure many deep cycle charge and discharges.

The great news about wet cell car batteries is that they are serviceable and you can check them routinely. Some makers actually make maintenance free batteries as well. Although, all batteries can experience corrosion around the terminals.
